Is battery backup (UPS) so much of an issue with cellphones readily available? (I am assuming that the cell tower backup systems would run as long as your own UPS).

I am on a UFB/voip system so I have given it some thought. I can readily put my modem/router onto my UPS but my ONT is 4 metres away through a wall so I would need to get another UPS.

What do cell towers use for backup power? battery UPS? Generators? Both?

Depends on the tower but not many actually have a generator, which was discovered after the Christchurch earthquake.

Everything went very smoothly. Only issue I've got is with DTMF tones - default setting (RTP + Inband) on the FritzBox works with the Snap voicemail, but fails with AirNZ/Telecom etc. Swap it to a setting (Inband) that works with the likes of AirNZ/Telecom is ok, but then can't access voicemail 8-(.
Not a big issue because admittedly I get all voicemail forwarded to my phone anyway.

I have had the same issue with DTMF and the team told me to set to AUTO and its working for all now.


Tried this and it now works 8-). Suspect they changed something somewhere in the system because when I tried auto originally it didn't work.

But definitely working now - which is awesome.

mikerussellnz: In your blog pictures I don't see any battery backup in either the outside or indoor parts?  I would have thought as part of the install for voice in emergency situations, it would have to have a battery backup somewhere? 


The external box (FTP Fibre terminal point or ETP in the 'copper telephony world') only has a fibre splice connection in it (no active components) so dosnt need a power supply. A UPS, in chorus's case @ present, is up to the service provider/end user to supply if they want one - just like you would have to keep your  ADSL modem running in the case of a power outage.   Dont forget VOIP services supplied by a ISP is just another use of your IP data service and not a direct replacement for POTS as we have been used too
