Can anyone confirm if the Asus RT-N56U can do Vlan tagging? Even better, has anyone managed to hook one straight to the fibre ONT? Cheers Bill

Hi Dan, I haven't chosen an ISP for fibre yet, leaning towards Snap. A duel band wireless n router is my preference (lots of devices - PC's Mac's phones Ipods ect) and the Asus RT-N56U is very well reviewed. I could get a great deal on the RT-N56U, but only if someone can confirm it's compatible with UFB / the local ISP's UFB protocols. So far the Vlan tagging is the main requirement I have found. Mostly I just want to understand how it all works. If it all gets too hard I'll just give up and go with the best ISP supplied gear I can find. Cheers Bill

Ah, Fair enough :) Certainly the manual makes no mention of VLAN tagging, hopefully someone with one of these devices can check for themselves. It might also pay to clarify Snap (or your chosen ISP's) position on support for non-supplied routers ;)

If the stock firmware can't do vlan tagging, I believe there are Tomato USB and DD-WRT builds for the Asus RT-56U that can.

The RT-N56U is not Broadcom based. It cannot run DD-WRT or Tomato based firmwares. It has also been out for quite a while now, If something were going to happen it probably would have done so by now. If you are proficient with Linux you may be able to get OpenWrt going on it, see here. After googling around a bit I could not find much in the way of VLAN tagging for this router. It'd be worth contacting Asus support to find if their firmware for it supports it. If you have access to another DD-WRT router, or a switch which can do VLAN tagging, you can have either do the VLAN tagging for the WAN port of the router, but it'll be another potential source of problems/point of failure. I'm unsure if a basic DD-WRT router can keep up with VLAN tagging at 100mb/s, for example.

Even some so-called "small business pro" routers from a certain major brand only handle about 55Mbps. So be wary what you choose, I really would stick with whatever your ISP recommend if you're not sure.

While this may be true for cheaper routers, there are others which can easily handle over 100mb. :)

Actually, most routers can't route packets at anywhere even close to 100mbps. Even if they have a gigabit port this is still true. General cheap router given away by most isps would be lucky to do anything over 30mpbs and what really kills them is NAT with too many connections open (ie, lots of users or bittorrent).

Most newer routers have amazing performance compared to 1+ year old models. When comparing routing performance however you do need to compare packet sizes - a device capable of routing ~900Mbps using 1518 byte frames will probably to struggle with 50Mbps using 64 byte frames. *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? Ah right I misread the model number as the 66U, the 56U (Ralink chipset) does custom firmware development though eg: https://code.google.com/p/rt-n56u/downloads/list

Thanks yuwei21, that is exactly what I was looking for. Looks like this model can do Vlan tagging so may be able to replace the ISP offered routers for a fibre connection. Current plan is to stay on ADSL until Telecom release their fibre plan details next year.

Hi Bill No problem, I have checked my one as well seems there is Vlan Tagging function in the router. Anyway I have sign up with Snap, hopefully will be play smoothly. Just curious how are you going to setup the phone system? By using ATA box or VOIP phone?
