Number of people on your street has nothing to do with the speeds you will or should be getting.

correct, but that wasn't the point i was making. I was merely stating I'm paying for 30/10 but receiving 100/50 ..

The number of people on the street will have really no bearing on your speeds as perhaps once ADSL1 used to have. And also Worldnet need to pay Chorus more for 100/50 so I'm surprised about this.

Well how exactly does the optical splitter work, doesn't having a passive splitter mean that all traffic will be broadcast to all users, surly that will slow a node down when more users sign up. Also makes me wonder whether you will be able to sniff someone else's traffic with wireshark.

Yes it is passive, but it is split at the cabinet - with an individual line to each house. The only line that has all of the customers packets on it is the backhaul fibre from the cabinet to the exchange.

Diagram (I am lazy, may not look right - sorry)
Customer ONT -----                                                                                                                          ------------ Exchange ONT
Customer ONT -----   Cabinet (Optically Multiplexed) --------------------------  Exchange (De-Multiplexed)  ------------ Exchange ONT

I would of thought the splitting is done based on wavelength. So i guess each user is given a wavelength so that the entire cabinet isn't one 'broadcast domain'. Might as well have ethernet hubs if that was the case.

It is done on wavelength. The optical multiplexers (Basically a prisim) in the cabinet do that. GPON (the system that it is) was decided as the cabinets do not need power, it is all done passively. I am kinda obsessed with UFB.

Short answer, No - it won't really slow down the performance for users in any meaningful way.

Um, it's not wavelength either. There are different mechanisms for keeping traffic private to the user in the up and downstream directions on the GPON segment. Downstream is essentially encrypted broadcast and upstream is timeslots per user. (MASSIVELY SIMPLIFIED)

Might pay to Google GPON to learn a little more.

GPON has 2.4Gbps downstream and 1.2Gbps upstream shared between all users on the split, which is typically 24 or 32 way. Traffic won't slow down because it's typically not oversubscribed on networks, and if you're only offering 100Mbps / 50Mbps for example on GPON with a 24 way split it's not possible to oversubscribe.

You can't sniff traffic because encryption is used, much like DOSCIS which shares a very similar bridged architexture.

Well you never see the other people's packets, so completely secure.
