I'm not really taking the Chorus website that personally. Last year it said that we'd get UFB in September 2012, and there were cables laid around then. It kept saying that until October, when the date for UFB got changed to February 2013. It now says that we have UFB. Our ISP say they've not been told that. Given that there are 6 houses on this block facing this street but only 1 green box on the footpath I'm inclined to think UFB hasn't really arrived. Many (though not all) of the nearby blocks have a more of those green boxes so we may be an island of copper in a lake of glass. I don't think we're the only island though.

Installs are done when you request it. In this case cabling would be run from the premises to the piller / pedistal that has the micro ducting in it. *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? Check my blog post

On the Chorus UFB network the Pedistalls are not always installed - If there are multipule dewellings (units) on one or adjacent sections then there may be a pedistall installed in a common bounary with a microduct with 7 or 12 tubes in it - When a connection request is made via an ISP then the site will be checked and if a Right of way 'ROW' or Multi Dewelling 'MDU' install is required - then Permisson to extend the microduct into and around the property will be requested via Chorus from all property owners and info passed on to all tenents before the installation will proceed

There is one a couple of houses away which I first noticed late last year. I'm not aware of any reason why the two houses that presumably serves would get special treatment. I'll be moving to fibre shortly after it becomes available but mostly because it is cool rather than because my current connection isn't good enough. I've sent an email to the address given on the map page. You should be good to go with UFB now - depends on what ISP you are going with as to when they are offering connections in your Exchange area. Anyway I had a quick look @ the design plans and Google Earth - I beleave you are currently connected via an Aerial Copper connection off the pole OS your house? If im correct - the UFB network builders will have put a multiduct up the pole (into a box terminal) - when your request for connection comes in the installers will replace your existing copper with an aerial tube and join it to the multiway and then 'blow' a fibre from the cabinet to your house. I hope this helps

I'd guess that any given neighbourhood would use either overhead or underground connections rather than a mix so hadn't considered that. We do have an overhead connection, and I think there is a new box on the pole. Here is the cable that runs up the pole to it. There is another cable on the opposite side of the pole but it only goes up 2 meters then the end is wrapped in tape. I thought was added relatively recently, and it certainly looks newer. The Orcon and Snap websites both say that UFB isn't available yet. If I instead give those an address from further up the road they say it is available.

What I'm now wondering is whether that ending 2m up the pole without connecting to anything indicates that there is more to do in the preparation phase, or if this is something that gets done only when the final part of the install gets requested.

What I'm now wondering is whether that ending 2m up the pole without connecting to anything indicates that there is more to do in the preparation phase, or if this is something that gets done only when the final part of the install gets requested. absolutly correct - in that the network build team havent finished, there should be a 25mm pipe up the pole with the multiduct in it and a box on top - Looking at your pics and google earth I suspect they may intend to change the pole before carrying on

The web site has been updated again, and depending on which part I read UFB is now due either in June 2013 or by June 2014. I checked a few weeks ago and none of the 6 houses on this block facing the same street had fibre available according to the ISPs.
