UltraFastFibre have been stringing up UFB on poles all over Wanganui for a while now (not sure about other centres). Wasn't it always in the specifications to allow aerial deployment anyway?

I'm not expecting any undergrounding where I am in central wellington - it's all overhead. Of course, the mighty northerly going through here might have a hand in accelerating that whole replacement cycle, as it's been killing the Telecom copper network for a while.... who knows what it will do to heavier 'fibre in the metal sheath' installs.... let alone the birds sitting on them.... ________ AK Works for Vodafone

Where I live (Palmerston North), > 95% of power and phone lines have been undergrounded already, so there ain't no poles left for Chorus to string anything to. One of my work mates lives in a street that still has overhead power lines, but Chorus put in underground UFB recently (very nice of them).

@ Kraven and antoniosk; Unfortunately google streetview isn't up todate enough to see what your roads look like with these extra cables strung around.

Ultra Fast Fibre is owned by WEL, the power lines company for Waikato. So they're just putting the fibre wherever the power lines are - on poles where there's poles, in the ground where power's been undergrounded. Damn fast rollout when they do it on poles. The majority of homes in the country still have overhead drops for the existing leadin. In areas that have already been deployed such as Petone a lot of digging was required for trenching of cable, when the end goal was overhead drops anyway. *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? Here in Whakatane all the fibre that's gone in so far has been underground, however it's all in areas that don't have existing poles. My place is currently fed from a pole and it wouldn't surprise me at all if that continues when UFB hits my street.

Here in Masterton, most of the residential fibre roll-out has been to splicing boxes on the top of power poles. Underground to the pole, over ground drop. I have not spotted one install from these new boxes. Personally I am waiting for our cabinet to be hooked up to some backhaul so we can request a connection. The CBD in Masterton is ALL underground. They have aerial ducts with no metal in them at all. I don't know if these are the ones Chorus are using but it means they can hang them in among the power cables, if they want to. These ducts are much harder to spot among the existing power cables.

I don't care what it looks like, I just want it. I live in Auckland ( New Windsor to be precise ) I am 2.6 km from the exchange and we have damd slow internet, there is nothing chorus can do until we get fiber. Our area was one of the lasts to get cabnitised and we dipped out, the people behind me get spectacular speed. When the power companies decide to bury the power cable, the fiber cables can be buries at the same time. Yes it is double handling but it is far more cost efficient as the fiber cables can be run with the power cables as there is no induction to worry about. I lived in Sydney for a while and there were overhead cables for cable tv, these cables will probably be a lot smaller. I had no issues with them then, nor now.

in the street i live in masterton they have put ufb on one side of the street about july last year and never touched the side i live on,power cables etc are all underground.

If you look, you will notice that the copper is only one one side of the street. Your line would be strung across the road. They would do that for UFB as well.
