This will be something to keep an eye on as companies introduce their UFB products. Does your provider use Network Based services vs CPE based services? What is the difference between the two?

*Network-based services make sense. For small numbers of simple services that do not require interworking between one another, the CPE-based approach is adequate. However, as the number, sophistication, and degree of interworking between services increases, network-based approaches hold a number of important advantages. For example, network-based approaches provide more efficiency and scalability than CPE based approaches. With CPE-based approaches, the CPE will need to become more sophisticated (and therefore, more expensive) to keep up with the demands of more advanced applications. Network-based solutions allow for shared resources and economies of scale to meet these demands. Secondly, it is more difficult to support service and user mobility with CPE-based approaches. If users want to access their services from a different location, they will need to bring their CPE with them or download software at the new location, wasting time and network resources. With network-based services, users can authenticate themselves from wherever they are and gain access to their complete suite of services. Finally, customer care, billing, configuration management, provisioning, and other management concerns are more easily handled with network-based solutions. History has shown that most end users quickly tire of loading applications themselves, keeping their software and hardware up to date, and troubleshooting when problems arise. Some like to “tinker”, and see this as a hobby, but most would prefer to get on with more meaningful activities by “outsourcing” these tedious duties to someone else.

WxC has one of the most advanced network integrated Telco-grade IP core platforms and management tools in New Zealand. WxC's NGN (Next Generation Network) has been designed and built entirely in-house and is the result of working closely with original equipment manufacturers of each of the network elements. By taking this integrated approach WxC has created a standards based, carrier grade network with robust architecture that will evolve with new technologies and services as they become available.

Can you give some examples of actual network based services that you could even do on a CPE?

Traffic management/QoS, things like setting up a separate Vlan for VOIP with protected bandwidth.

As Maverick says, CPE to do this gets expensive and complicated.

A simple example is NAT and DHCP. With layer 2 UFB, the ONT can just deliver your a layer 2 service to your port.

Then rather than a router, you just plug in a cheap switch, and you can reuse your existing ADSL modem even though it doesn't have a wan port. It just needs to be reconfigured.

You'll also see products like a samba share (windows networking share) that you can store your stuff in. This may also get backed up automatically for you and you'll have a web interface to download/restore files from anywhere in the world.

A few examples ; voice mail, call waiting, call forwarding. All of these services could either be network or CPE based.

It all depends on your provider and the voice solution they've decided to offer. We have the functionally to provide all our services via the network, however this doesn't stop you from using CPE based services - it just provides flexibility for the end user.

One major point of difference is if your CPE is offline so are all the CPE based services. When these services are Network based they'll still operate if your CPE fails.  Network services generally have a higher uptime than residential CPE devices.

For example one really cool network feature we have is Call Forward Unreachable - if a FTTH/VFX circuit goes offline due to a power cut (or any other reason) our network has the smarts to be able to forward your calls to a number of your choice, automatically.  When your CPE comes back online our network will automatically stop forwarding your calls.  This is a network feature you wouldn't be able to replicate with a CPE only based service.

Yip, another cool idea long my theme, if you plug your computer into someone elses ONT and the provider is using PPPoE then you could terminate your own account on your own computer.  So as long as it's all in the same UFB area, you could be using your data cap at your friends place.

This would also move the windows share with you around the network that I was talking about.

Imagine being able to have your own personal movie collection in your bit of the cloud and taking it with you to a friends place just by pluging your netbook into a free port on their ONT.

Pretty standard I have to say. I would want some kind of router too just to separate the broadcast domain, although bridge would also be fine if you had a remote firewall.

Pretty standard for some, not so standard for others :)
