Over the last 12 months Skinny coverage at my place has been slowly getting worse. After being great when we moved in it's now at the point where it's almost non-existent in my office in the garden and I regularly have dropped calls.

But I woke up this morning with a smile, its my birthday, turned on my phone and bang - there was the little 4G icon on my N5X. I thought, how did they know ?

Did a couple of quick speed tests, 32Mb/13Mb put my Spark VDSL 19Mb to shame and I immediately thought about buying a 4G modem and whether we could manage our hour or two a night of streaming on a mobile plan.

But half an hour later it was gone and I'm back to virtually no signal in my office again.

2D have been 4G up here for over a year now. It would be nice to have some Skinny 4G love.

I suspect Spark could've been testing something - although none of the Cell Sites in the area have been recently licensed for 4G according to gis.geek.nz

If you look at https://www.spark.co.nz/help/servicealert/mobileservicealert  it shows that Spark are carrying out maintenance at Otaki today between 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm.  Maybe they started early? Also tomorrow 11.59 am to 5 pm.

Happy to report that Spark are turning on 4G in Otaki over the next couple of days so you should be stable by the weekend.

Maybe time to look at our 4G Wireless Broadband at $52 per month for 100GB :)

Happy Birthday

100Gb IS quite hard to keep under, but it's 100Gb/$52 that lasts 30 days, so nothing stopping you going 200Gb/$104 in a month when you feel the need too ;)

also, you just before mentioned using 4G hotspot, so this is WAAAAY better than any mobile offering :D

Yup, I've setup a couple of 4G routers for local businesses using 2D in the last 12 months and have always wondered what it would be like for home use. I've been very underwhelmed with VDSL and this could be the solution.

The first time I considered going naked was in the UK in 2000 but my wife has always objected saying we need a landline. Now everyone in the family has more mins than they can use on their mobiles so maybe we are finally about to do it.

Very happy using skinny in Lyall Bay, steady 30Mb download does drop to 20 at school holidays but able to stream lighbox, google music and youtuble with no issues, prime concern for me is upload and get a steady 20Mb ... if not more and that leaves copper for dead ... VDSL well cant get it where i am so happy to go wireless and ease of use.

Agree, I'm on Skinny in Tuakau and have only occasionally 'run out' of data in the last few days of my 30 day month, but happily they allow an immediate topup and restart the 30days 100gb in mere minutes of payment.

We happily stream NFlix, CW, Lightbox and TVNZ on-demand, sometimes up to 3 streams simultaneously when the boys are watching on the telly and my wife and I each have our 'own' shows to catch up on a rainy Sunday arvo.

Must say though (see latest Truenet Report) it can drop off pretty badly over peak times, and my usual 25-35mb/s can drop to 8 🙄
