Maybe the Lock will only apply to handsets purchased with Skinny money... With a plethora of handsets that'll work on multiple networks who would buy into a network that locked an existing handset???

By the looks of it people with not a lot of money, I would take this as probably being kids/teens. The average teen in NZ is not really going to know if a phone is locked or what that even means.

And they've probably got a new(ish) smart phone they bought off trademe.... And if you read this and other forums these are exactly the people who have trouble understanding the commitment to a contract, repaying the handset subsidy, why they can't just change plans/networks/handsets in the time it takes to order some fast food. If Skinny goes down that path they're buying themselves a lot of head banging... and that is not a way to keep costs down

While I believe locking handsets to networks is rather silly, it does semi solve one problem. Currently if a Vodafone or XT phone is stolen you can just use it on 2degrees without having to worry about any IMEI blocks as 2degrees has no blocked phone register. This way whoever steals/buys a stolen phone will have to pony up $30 and probably get caught in the process when they ask telecom for the unlock code :)

insane: 2degrees has no blocked phone register. You know that thieves don't care about block lists, right? They flog the phones off straight away. They don't care whether they work or not. And if they do care they can just change the IMEI. I mean, put it this way, did phone theft suddenly go from zero to 100 when 2degrees entered the market? iPad + iPhone 4S + 2degrees 3G data 4tw! I think its a great idea. The youth market needs something like this, but I'm not sure it will really take off. A lot of the people at my school are running on Vodafone, with Vodafone brought handsets, so the bands wont be suited to Telecoms WCDMA network, which means many will need new phones, which many cannot afford. They need to have 2G services I reckon for this to really take off. We teens like being able to try something out, and if it doesn't work/suit our needs, we want to be able to leave and go back to where we were prior, which isnt really possible on two almost entirely different networks.
