Quite a big deadzone in coverage where I am in Oteha, close enough to Albany. Their Tauranga and Hamilton coverage seems a hell of a lot better than the 3 main centres judging from the coverage map

Does Skinny's coverage match that of XT or do they only use some of the XT towers?

They are a 100% owned subsidiary of Telecom and run on the XT network.

It will be interesting to see if there is a response from 2 degrees, vodafone, and Slingshot to these Skinny prepay plans.

I was referring to the the 2degrees mobile broadband zone but yes, in my local area XT/Skinny coverage is the best and it makes sense of Skinny to use XT towers

Since the XT network is HSPA+ enabled.

If you are in an area where HSPA+ is available on XT and you have a handset that has the capabilities, will you get HSPA+ on Skinny?

Cheers.

I can't see any reason why not.

And I really like having roll over minutes.

You are, I think, the first person I know who actually uses 'rollover minutes'.

Most people either eat into their bonus minutes (and since the bonus minutes don't roll over, nothing does),  or use less than their standard minutes, meaning they have shed loads of rolled over minutes left unused that eventually expire.

On your plan, where you get 60 normal minutes and 100 bonus, you would need to use less than 60 minutes one month (for any to roll over), then over 160 in one of the following months to make use of those rollover minutes.  That kind of huge swing in usage is pretty rare.

True but on Skinny he has no bonus minutes and the required swing for rollover to make a difference is much less.

On a side note, the wording on Skinnys website makes me cringe, I'm 19 so probably in their target market and it reminds me of my parents trying to talk like teenagers, seems a bit hit and miss but maybe that's just me.

In terms of the pricing, looks good for the casual user, but as others have pointed out pretty average for heavy data use. Will probably sign up for a sim (free is free), but I can't see myself using it. Also I like topping up once a month then not having to worry about it again for another 30 days, so a con of skinny for me is the weekly top up I would have to do, I would pay more on other networks to save the hassle.

Good on Skinnys for having great CSR's and reply times at this stage, but when they have only needed to give away free sims so far and explain some plans the real test will be when they have an established customer base as others have mentioned.

For now I will be sticking with xt, then next month when back in Wellington moving porting back to voda or 2degrees, unfortunately skinny won't feature in this decision.

But still will keep an eye out for any future additions.

Likewise i'm waiting for a competitive response from my existing provider. Unfortunately it is not economically viable for me to switch to Skinny as I would have to buy another handset and their is nothing wrong with my existing one.

billgates:
kobiak: a bit disappointed, because of 10mb of DATA on weekly combos :( expected at least 30-50mb :(

with all addons wont be much cheaper then existing deals :(

Loose Lips is good value.

$4/month - 40 minutes to any NZ network, 100 texts and 10MB data.
$16/month - 160 minutes to any NZ network, 400 texts and 40MB data.

Add another $16/month for 480MB data and for $32 you get 160 any NZ network minutes, 400 texts and 520MB data.

Do these weekly amounts carry over for the entire month or is the counter reset every week??

Do I supposed to get any confirmation email from online free SIM sign up?

I did it yesterday, first thing in the morning after I saw this topic. Got message on screen, that skinny would be in touch shortly, but was not.

Nothing stops you topping up $20 every 30 days though. Not disagreeing, just pointing that out.

They posted about some problems with the online signup (and subsequently took it down from the site) so email or call them to be sure.

Yes ideally that would work, but if I got data as well for $8 a week, and topped up how much I needed for the month chances are I would go over my usage and end up using the next week's topup and have to top up again! , so I still prefer monthly.
