RonaldoDloaf: Super soaker filled with warm water and a little bit of white vinegar, immitation pee basically.
The white vinegar (undiluted) is also excellent for getting rid of and offending cat spray stink.

Will not harm the beast but will clearly express your dominance in the territory when you give them a squirt.
Only thing i have found to get rid of smell was baking soda.  Went to Warehouse but they didnt have any super soakers or water guns of any sort. They only had nerf guns.
I saw one tabby going to spray the hedge so went out with a spray bottle and squirted the cat. It went to neighbours so I followed it and it jumped one fence straight into waiting claws of another bigger cat. What a cat fight that was. I sprayed them and tipped water on to no effect. eventually the tabby I followed there lost and took off. was funny to watch

As stupid as it sounds I have found a pump bottle mostly full of water is enough to put most cats off. Apparently their reflection in the bottle puts them off or something

Live trapping and hosing is somewhat effective, on some cats and legal.

Poison, kill traps, gin traps and firearms are exceedingly effective, but sadly illegal. Stupid hippy animal lovers have pretty much won against your rights to protect your property from animals allowed to roam at will.

Pity no one has invented myxomatosis or RHD for cats yet.

Most people have objections to domestic animals being attacked and basically abused by untrained idiots using firearms and pellet guns of any kind in ineffective and often cruel ways.

Every other week it seems there are stuff stories about domestic animals suffering this kind of abuse with these weapons and others.

Then there is another category that actually enjoys the cruelty side of it. Statistically there is a correlation with this particular category having a high occurrence of interfering with vulnerable humans in violent ways as well.

Another thing. The poison suggestions made in this thread already are not even close to instant death. A friend of mine had a female cat who was poisoned by someone (vet's opinion) using the means suggested. Death took some time and was not pleasant for the cat and really not nice for the family either.

Not only that - the poisons suggested are also attractive to dogs and dangerous to children.

Ok so there might be a few people who are going to think I'm just a wuss or something, but some of you are just not thinking straight. Come on guys.

I think you'll find they're trying to be funny - unfortunately the choice of material is rather tasteless.

Any mention of the vehicle related poison, even in jest, is highly inappropriate, namely for the incredibly painful and inhumane death that it inflicts on an animal.

In regards to the smell, we use this stuff called Industrial OdourX at work (I work at Middlemore Hospital, one of the busiest hospitals). We've had people come into ED who haven't showered in like months, stinks the entire place out. As soon as they go, a few sprays of this stuff and its all fixed. Stuff is absolutely amazing. Its in a bottle just like Spray and Wipe or something, I assume you can buy it at like Mitre 10 or something. So give that a try if you can find it.

And the root cause, we once had a cat spraying our front door, my room was right next to it and I had a window there. One night I sat up and it came around at about 11pm. He never showed his face after he got a bucket of water on him.

So how do you deal with a problem cat that is spraying everywhere, it's bad enough when it's happening outside, but when that problem cat comes inside and starts spraying who paying for the damage and clean up?

If it was your cat spraying inside my house would you be willinging to shoulder the cost of clean up?......if not then I reserve the right to deal to the problem they way I see fit

I have tried everything Mitre10 sells locally.  I got up this morning and the smell as I opened my bedroom door is shocking. The cat has sprayed about twice as much.  So another big cleanup.
This honestly is beyond a joke

Ok it seems clear from the above that you (gregmcc) are seriously advocating this method. The OP has already made it clear they are totally uninterested in and opposed to this kind of method.

The point is gregmcc, like many other problems in life there are appropriate and inappropriate ways of dealing with it.

Cruel methods which cause pain and suffering are not on the appropriate list.

I like Tardtasticx ? idea. Only thing is dont know if I can stay up all night waiting.   Since warehouse doesnt have supersoaker I will try kmart.  As soon as I open the door the cats I see take off so need something to spray them from further away.

Try these guys http://www.easytek.co.nz/animalstop.asp

Personally I would have cracked out the Gamo Big Cat by now but each to their own.

Step 1) Borrow humane trap from SPCA or pound. Tell them you have a possum problem.

Step 2) Bait trap with tasty cat snack, bacon perhaps.

Step 3) Wait.

Step 4) When trap is sprung, confirm identity of cat.

Step 4) Piss on cat, to show it who's boss and who owns the turf.

Step 5) Stand clear and release cat into the wild.

Step 6) Snicker every time you think of the cat licking itself clean for the night.

Step 7) Leave trap baited for a few more nights in case there's more than one cat (repeated marking can be a sign of a pissing contest between 2 beasties).

Step 8) Return trap to SPCA, with a donation to their cause.
