Came home from work Thursday and all the digital clocks in our house are flashing, as if there's been a power cut. Suppliers Contact Energy and Vector say there were no outages in our area on Thursday.

Then we notice that we have no hot water. Checked the switch/fuse box and the hot water switch is on. I guess we will need to get a plumber in this morning but would welcome any comments or advice on all this.

is it likely that we will need a new element in our cylinder (in fact, can that even be done?) or a whole new cylinder? Could something failing in the cylinder have caused a spike that tripped all the clocks, or could a system spike have caused the problem with our hot water cylinder?

Don't know much about all this and keen to hear thoughts or ideas. Thanks.

It would be an electrician you want - not a plumber.
An electrician can replace the cylinder element - if it has fried and needs replacing.

Cylinder elements are a standard replaceable part, they will drain the cylinder to replace it,

BUT it might not be the element, the other common point of failure is the thermostat, which is an even easier item to replace,

get a electrician to have a look.

I am a bit concerned that if it is that the element burned out and your clocks were flashing as they should be on seperate electrical circuits. It sounds like a power out / brown out. If so, some hot water cylinders have a reset switch on them/beside them as well.

It is normal for plumbers to have an electrical registration which allows them to replace elements and thermostats related to the hot water cylinder. Personally I prefer a plumber to do that kind of thing because they have the most experience in this area.

Have a look near the hotwater cylinder. If it has a controller or switch of some kind you may need to reset that manually.

Also - it is unusual - but some thermostats have a reset switch built in. Mine is Spanish or Italian or something and resets through a small hole in the top of the thermostat. I am unsure if it this is an electrical overload reset or a temperature based protection against runaway over-heating. I have no manual or instructions and this has only happened once.

If you are going to expose the thermostat - please turn the power off first. There are often bare wires and exposed connectors under that protective cover.

Very interesting. Sparkie says Vector installed a new 'smart' meter in our meter-box on Thursday (without telling us, I might add) and installed it incorrectly, leaving the ripple control in the 'off' postion when it should currently be 'on'. Nothing wrong with the cylinder, thermostat or element.

Now I have to get Vector round to fix it and claim the Sparkie's bill back from them.

BTW: The Sparkie, Rob Stevens from HotWaterFastFix, who I found via the 'net, gave me the best tradesman service experience I have had for long time. Great communication, punctual, no nonsense, didn't charge an arm and a leg. Can't ask for more than that.

Some of the firms I called wanted to charge 'after hours rates' at 9.00 am on a Saturday. Rob didn't. One wanted $250+gst minimum for the first hour and $90+ gst/hour after that. Rob's all up bill was $132.

Didn't know about nocowboys but have now done that.

The Vector sparkie did some sort of workaround on the ripple control and got our hotwater going, but said he would need to put in a works request to get someone to come back and fix it properly.

As I understand it, the ripple control is still showing'off' (i.e. hot water off) but our hot water is on.

I dont know if your in in west auckland, probably other areas, theres a ton of hot water faults, most ppl on my street havent had hot water since saturday, and power company says there are alot of hot water jobs open. you might want to check with the power company its just not a hot water fault in your area which is why your ripple control is off like ours.

they have no ETA of when they will get around to fixing the hot water since they still have alot of houses without power

Interesting. We are in Parnell. Our hot water is on again, albeit apparently not with a permanent fix. There does seem to be an issue with the ripple control, arising from the installation of the new smart meter.

Now I have to try and get Vector to reimburse me for the sparkie's bill.

Ouch, But in saying that I had a cockup with the install of my smart meter that replaced two meters, and now they are wanting to again change me to an incorrect tarrif with fixing their earlier cockup at install time.

Imma gonna get onto genisis about this sometime soon but I figure they have more pressing things to worry about at the moment.

Good luck with that. Did you phone your power company to report the problem, and they told you that they had no problems, so you gave them the opportunity to fix it? If so you may have a case, but otherwise I don't think they will cover it.

I actually would have thought the electrician would know about the problem if they had been getting lots of calls about it.

It's now possible for a plumber to have an Associated Tradesperson electrical registration but I don't think it is routine. As previous discussion it's a "some do and some don't situation"

That's unacceptable. If there's more than one home in the area with the problem it's unlikely to your gear at fault and the supplier (wholesaler and/or retailer, Vector and Contact Energy in our case) should fix this.

Do you know whether you have had the new 'smart' meter installed just recently? Our problem started when the new meter was installed on Thursday and they left the ripple control with the wrong setting
