Hey all.

I am decorating our house and running new phone cabling inside walls while the gib is off.

I was wanting to take all the cables from each room to a central point in the roof space (ie: a krone block) and join them to the incoming connection. Been doing some reading and noted mention of the 'master' socket and how all extensions must be connected off this socket. Is this the case?

Could I put this master socket on the board holding the krone and then connect all the sockets off this in the house?

Just looking for a bit of advice. Already got the cable (4 wire cable)

Thanks

Yup, you really only need one phone socket which is where your block will be. You may also want to install a VDSL splitter if you are not going to be using VOIP.

TBH the roof probably isn't a good place to put it. Preferably should be in the garage or laundry or somewhere like that where there is easy access. Also preferably on the other side of the wall to where the phone line (and the fibre line) will be coming in.

We plan to put attic stairs into the roof space so no issues with access.

Yup but the ideal situation is to have all your network equipment at one point. While a copper phone line being sent up there from your ETP (where the phone line enters the house) isn't too hard using cat5e, your issue will arise when fibre is rolled out as you can't really preinstall that (actually you may be able to run single mode). I suggest you ask Beccarra if you could do this.

The other option is to install ducting from the ETP to your wiring area with pull cable so you can pull through fibre at a later time. Again I suggest you ask Beccarra (or Steveon) about this.

Otherwise what your going to end up with is the ONT in one part of your house while your networking closet is somewhere else. It's not the end of the world but definitely not ideal.

If it were me rewiring I would be using cat5e cable rather than the old phone cable.

Oh didn't even notice that. USE A MINIMUM OF CAT5E cable. I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. Even if your not going to be using structured cabling now you probably will do in the future and its sooo much easier to do it now. Will probably also add value to your house.

We built a new house 2 years ago and I ran two cat5 wires to every room, tv and computer point in the house. One for network the other phone. I ran it back to a central cupboard. I also installed an adsl splitter with one point for my adsl modem in the cupboard. I now have my router set up with hard wired pc's and media player with up to nine wired devices on my network. If I need more I can change the extra phone cable to a network wire. With all of the later tvs and devices Internet ready all I have to do is plug them straight in and I am away. No wireless adapters needed and faster too.

One other thing, now with wireless phones running multiple handsets from one base station less phone plugs are needed. So if you run a few put them in a place that could also be used for computers or Internet ready devices.

Grant, firstly, as others have suggested, do a proper job of it, run cat5e to every location, ideally two unless you can see no reason. Dont just run them to a attic space and terminate them on a krone module, rather terminate them on a patch panel and site your router their also.

as for using a master filter, am I not mistaken that you have something to do with TCL, therefore I presume you are on cable, therefore a master filter will not help, of course if you are on DSL a master filter is a must when rewriing not an option, again this can be integrated into a structured cabling system quite readily.

Do a quick check on Sbiddles blogs he has a good blog on house wiring, search on some of my posts, you will find lots of advise there as well.

Also if the attic space is above the insulation line and you intend to site network gear there then its probably not suitable.

Cyril

Hi Cyril. Makes sense. One run for each network connection to cupboard. Plug those direct into router. I'll bring a cable connection into the cupboard too.

Is the thinking around using cat5 for phone that it could always be easily changed to a network connection later?

I'll be putting the 'master socket' in the cupboard.. It won't be used but all other sockets can come off.

Will do, thanks. It's just putting the wires in place at this stage.. Won't be connecting other ends for a little while yet. Just want to get the 'wires in walls' stage correct to begin with :)

The latest phone plugs do not need a master box like the older types. All are two wire and you just star them all off from one point. The telecom crimp connectors etc can be bought off trademe and are the best to use as they have a silicone paste inside to stop oxidation of the wires.
Instead of using a master socket this is where you should put an adsl master filter.
The two wires used for phone are spare in a network (ethernet) plug so you can run phone and network off the same wire but if you want to up the speed to gigabit network all eight wires are used.

Ok thanks. So just need new jacks? An an adsl filter will have no detrimental effect if ADSL is not in use?

If you do not use a splitter you need to add a filter between each phone and jack plug you use. Also if you have an alarm and use ADSL you then definately need a splitter or else the alarm will interfere with your ADSL signal as it will be unfiltered.
Have a look at this site- http://www.ees.net.nz/it/doingyourowntelephonewiring.htm

Maybe to avoid confusion Zolly should indicate whether he is using or likely to use ADSL
