Skolink: Do you work for GG in Hamilton by any chance?
No, Tru-Test animal scales team but previously designed all the production automated test systems to point out other people's faults - what a job. I have designed the electronics in the new EziWeigh 5 and 6, my wife designed the case. GG is not capable of designing a proper scale, good looking energizers maybe, but not scales (or RFID tag readers). Anyone feel free to dispute this, and you will be corrected ;-).
Early this morning I had a brief look at the standards we've got, but did not get to follow-up. We do have numerous other standards for various countries. Another engineer indicated 99% sure for power adapters the specified input power must be +/- at rated load, and he would be surprised if appliances are + only (which you confirmed it is). I know 100% for sure on our battery and power adapter energizers we need to be within +/- 10%, but that is on an international rating label so goes beyond NZ requirements.
So then it must be the EN standards that have a tight +/- requirement, Europe is certainly leading in the efficiency drive. Set top boxes are high on the list of items to tackle, they are apparently working on a standard for addressing the high standby power use.
I'll follow-up when I get a chance, got a bit busy today.
Niel: An electric fence energizer is not a heating appliance
Depends....
Yea, efficiency is around 60% max when running off a battery... However the largest one we make for South African game parks still consumes only around 100W. Strip grazers are around 1/2W, life style block energizers usually under 10W.
Energizers do work really well as a cat deterrent, including keeping the 2 legged neighbours "cats" off your kid's expensive new trampoline . You know the kind of "cats" that climb over the fence around 3:30 in the afternoon leaving muddy shoe prints on the trampoline...
