A built in diagnostic tool for ping or packet loss. Would save from having to use third party tools.

NFC chip in the router and perhaps, bundled with a couple of programmable NFC tags to stick around the house that the router can reprogram so smartphones can automatically connect when tapped. No more reciting awkward WiFi passwords when guests are around!

If using Open Source based BIOS then Dual BIOS configuration. I don't know of a router that does this yet.

e.g. so if you totally mess the BIOS up you can flip a switch, hold down reset for 30 and it will load the stock firmware.

Combined DHCP/DNS. So DHCP addresses get added to local nameserver i.e. split DNS.

i.e. dnscache style.

An option to limit time or data usage by user as well as connected device, where each user is required to login to the gateway and their usage tracked, regardless of which physical device (e.g. iPad, smartphone, desktop, etc.) they are using.

An option to set a "priority" for each user, so when there are multiple devices connected and the unit is straining to keep up, certain users (e.g. the person paying the bill) get preferred access.

A diagnostic tool that isn't downloaded from the internet.

Any idea how frustrating it is to be having problems accessing the interweb, and you try to run Telecom Broadband Assist as a first option, and it tells you there is an update available that you have to download, but you can't because you can't access the 'net!

Administrator tools available via smartphone app, so I can check usage per user/device, suspend or enable users/devices, monitor speeds, change user priorities, etc. via Android or iOS app, even when I'm not at home (e.g. when I'm at work and "need" to set up temporary access for kids' friends).

A companion app for smartphones/tablets that will allow proper sync/management of the router, from both within the network and outside.

Use a proper cert pair between the app and the router when coming in from the WAN side that can be generated online, and use the app as a way to pass diagnostic info and new settings between the router and the ISP, since the phone/tablet has a 3g connection to pick up new settings from the ISP and then push them to the router. Also use it to get diagnostics off the router and submit a ticket to the ISP with all the test results contained in the ticket to minimize the support staff having to ask the user to run random tests and copy and paste the results back to the ISPs help guys.
