Transparent caching proxy (like Squid), to cache content to a locally attached storage. Would be very useful in large households where people more than likely visit the same sites on multiple devices, in order to serve content faster and also save bandwidth.

An optional feature which enables an automatic connection monitoring service, which executes user-definable actions upon a change in connection state. (Eg: Automatically reboot the router if internet connection is down for more than 5 minutes; or send an email when an internet connection is established)

Expanding upon the already mentioned content filtering (by coffeebaron, nigs etc) - the filter list should be in a format compatible with existing popular lists, such as a hosts file format or AdBlock+ format - this will allow us to import existing lists (such as malware domain block lists, privacy lists etc).
Furthermore, the filtering service should resolve blocked domains to a blank image/HTML, so that ugly "page cannot be displayed" messages do not appear in the middle of a website.

Backup/restore firmware to attached USB (similar to the USB BIOS flashback feature found in modern PC boards) so that it's nearly impossible to brick a router, and easy to go back to factory defaults.

The device should come with three seashells. They should be important at critical moments, there should be no documentation on their use, and any clicks on (?) or presses of F1 regarding said seashells should result in the router laughing at the user.
Subsequent swearing should result in the user being fined.
