As posted in the Telecom Geekzone modem/gateway feature sugestions: round one here is where you can discuss the suggestions.

Below is the current number of votes per suggestion:

^ that was my concern going into this. Whoever is first to the board at 12.00 is now in the running as the 'feature suggestor'. Someone with the same idea, but 2 minutes later posting, now appears to be out of the running to be one of the five 'feature winners'. Not only that, their identical suggestion is now turned into a vote for the (slightly) quicker person.

I'm not sure how this could be overcome though, as Mauricio has commented, we don't want people spamming already-suggested features, jsut to get into the running.

Remember that a few people will also get the new modem/gateway for testing and the final version as a prize. There's more than one prize in total, so you can keep voting (or coming with new suggestions).

Voting is an important part - even if you haven't posted an idea, voting gives you an entry to win the device, and gives you the chance to shape it.

I've asked Mauricio if the forum posts in that thread can be randomised so that the first few don't get all the votes. People are not bothered to read the whole thread.

Most of the suggested features so far look like the spec from a Fritz!BOX.

It will be interesting to see which features Telecom end up implementing.

I just made a list over the weekend, sorta just dumped them all

Fritzbox minus its horrible wifi plus tomatoUSB's additional features would be winner of a device.

I'm hoping they use an open source firmware base or make it open source. If you're crowdsourcing the ideas, you may as well open source the project to allow it to grow, improve and expand.

I think it's a great idea of Telecom asking people here what they would like to see in a new router. May stop some of the moaning about "Why don't they have this in the broadband router"

Yep... And I'd like to see more security stuff in there. I think people are only exploring the hardware for now...

Answering this here as to not spam the thread...
stevesmithnz:
eXDee: Dynamic DNS support - Telecom could even host their own dyndns subdomains!

Does Telecom not supply static IPs, why would you require DDNS

Because some users make use of dyndns services, its a common feature on a lot of home routers. Not everyone actually needs a static IP or wants to pay for it. I am one such user, i don't care what my home IP is, as long as i can get to it, as i'm the only one accessing it.
The idea of them hosting their own dydns is simply a novel idea i added, just implement the most popular ones + a manual option and that's sufficient.

I put a suggestion for DNS per reserved DHCP address. This would make it easier to have a device at home such as a Roku and define unblock-us for that device, while using the ISP's own DNS for everyone else :)

I think it deserves a vote (even though I am not allowed to win the prizes anyway).

Removed it. And since it's not an answer made it count one point less for the "trusted" status.

You know people are concerned about data caps when the option to meter users has the highest votes hahaha

edit: though my suggestion on page 4 for racing stripes is doing rather well, someone just flagged it as the answer

To be eligible for entry into the main prize of a years free broadband of Telecom’s 500GB home broadband package you must enter the competition via the Geekzone Crowd Sourcing forum page before 11.59am on 10th of March 2013 and provide an answer in the specified field

Think the date might be a bit wrong there?
