Topic # 121023 21-Jun-2013 11:28 One person supports this post Send private message

Folks, just got this from Telecom New Zealand:

An internal Telecom panel has completed the review on the highest polled submissions with recommendations to be presented back to key internal stakeholders next week.In the interim of this review, a Request for Information covering the mandatory requirements of the modem has being sent to prospective vendors.

Telecom is in the process now of completing an update on each of the top submissions, explaining the rationale behind why each modem feature has being included or excluded from the final build recommendation. This information will be shared with Geekzone users next week.

Looking forward to seeing the rationale, actually. Be an interesting insight into the decision making process.

From the quote of Adam Savage from MythBusters "I reject your reality and substitute my own." and in the words of telecom "I reject your ideas and substitute our own.".

Although i am generally positive about this project and would probably like to see the resulting product sold in retail shops to become "the" standard router in new zealand, i do feel that their meeting will have

'How can we make port forwarding and navigation menus more "thompson-like" ' at the top of the list.

You mean awkward, unintuitive, and laggy?

I think "requires a masters in astrophysics to decipher exactly what the router is going to do if you set the option" is closer to it.

I think the thompsons are good routers. My only complaints really are the gui
1) Cant change dhcp range because they try to be "smart" and help you - but bugs in the smartness make the gui incomplete. Loled at googling how and found a telecom knowledgebase article on how to telnet into the router to do it.

2) the weird menu system on the left

3) The hidden-in-plain-sight 'configure' link on the top right shouldnt be there - i should already be on the configure page by the time i get to that link.

Got a raw update on the ideas with comments on them. Looks pretty good. Telecom is sending me a public version with final outcome/plans next week.

When they said "next week", did they mean it in the same way they said "next week" last time?

Comes with a free lightning bolt stickers to make it go faster* - since I'm part of this I can almost guarantee it's going to be awesome, stay tuned folks!

*Damn, this didn't make it into the final build.
