I was following a car that rear ended the car in front. Police came etc., the driver admitted fault. When I got home I looked at the footage from my dash cam, and saw that the car never applied its bakes (no break lights), something I didn’t notice when it happened. Didn’t make any difference in this case.
Well worth having a camera because when things happen fast, it’s hard to recall all the information and the brain sometimes fills in the blanks (incorrectly).

Mark:
Ouranos: With so many muppets making up their own road rules - like lane splitting through stationary traffic, indicating right when you're going straight through a roundabout, etc - all I can say is: bring on self-drive cars.

Just to clarify ... "lane splitting through stationary traffic" is called "filtering", when cars are stationary on a road they are classed as parked and you are allowed to overtake parked cars, you could do it in a car if you fit through ;-)

If the traffic starts to move, as it often does, then filtering on the left becomes lane splitting on the left - which is illegal.

Yes it does.  But if the person stays in the right side of the left lane (assuming a dual lane road) then they are "overtaking" the car in the left lane and not lane splitting the right hand lane ;-)

But if someone is filtering on the left of a single lane road (so have the kerbside to their left) then they are being a bit of a twonk, especially if they go past a side road that someone could be turning left into.

blakamin:

And don't get me started on people that turn into the wrong lane (turning left then end up in a right lane, etc) or people that stop in a merging lane.

Yup..floor it to gain speed in that “mini” on ramp, glance over shoulder for the gap to “merge like a zip” look ahead to find the car in front has panicked and hit the brakes..

The best way to deal with muppets is to take a defensive or advanced driver course, I did and I have been driving of 40 years with out a blame accident. One thing I  taught me that has helped me survive is, every other car is driven by a muppet, so slow down back off stay alert and stay safe. Also, the roads are not a race track or a game, I would rather be late than "dead" on time.

Getting angry never helps in fact it increases ones risk of accident considerably so by slow down back off stay alert and stay safe i avoid much anger..

I believe NZ should introduce advanced driver training or defensive driving training as part of gaining or renewing licences for those who got their licence before introduction.

It's possible that the bulbs were dead. There's at least one car model (a Starlet from memory) that is notoriously bad for having a leaky hatchback boot that constantly causes the brake lights to short out and need replacing.

I always found roundabouts fun when I took the car over to France!

You drive off the ferry and all of a sudden have to give way to the left...! It's easy enough - many UK drivers become 'bi-lingual' drivers and you adapt pretty quickly - but for the first few roundabouts it does require a lot of very conscious thought, especially when driving a car which has the steering wheel on the wrong side for the traffic direction!

I dread to think what life would be like if the North and South islands drove on different sides such as they may have if the Frogs had bagged the South Island from Akaroa!

errr if the French had bagged the South Island, your use of that term for the French is derogatory

If he's English then he's allowed to call the French "Frogs", it's part of the English cultural right to not be nice or in any way favour the French for anything ever.

I'm English - we are not even slightly concerned about being derogatory to the French, believe me!

Quite so. We once fought a war against the buggers that lasted 100 years!
