I've updated mine, device is faster, noticed a few improvements with music player, like status bar when in main menu. Device doesnt seem to hang as much anymore. I have now turned on theme effects and auto rotation as they seem to work perfectly (faster).

Is there anyway to 'lock' the phone in landscape mode i wonder?

Calling quality still the same, bluetooth connectivity (parrot car kit) still same, email app doesnt have finger scrolling still but everything else has.

Voip seems promising, mine is all set up, just waiting on nokia to release voip intergrater app via software updater.

Dial pad still doesn't have letters attached to the number buttons. Doesn't really worry me, just gives me an excuse not to call word numbers.

A few words have changed throughout like mine now says 'swipe finger to answer' when locked and someone is calling.

My memory now sits around 25MB, used to be 35MB+.  That is with about 13 items running.

battery life is the same, -did install nokia email app, but that seemed to drain my battery faster, so unistalled it.

Overall i would now rate this phone up there with the Iphone. Nokia N97= 8/10 IPhone=7/10

Girlfriend rates N97 7/10 and IPhone 8/10 because she still thinks UI is harder to understand.

Nokia have since made the firmware update available again for download, and appear to fixed the problems plaguing the initial release.

N97's who updated their N97 Late, or at least after the firmware was removed from servers, & put back, then updated don't appear to have problems.

Some very random, and worrying symptoms were being reported with the early release version of V20, including excessive battery consumption among others...

You know guys, I have been a fan of Nokia for years. Bought at least 15 different models, mostly high-end devices. I am now thinking Nokia has really fallen behind in terms of software and hardware development. Here I am saying this with a N97 in my hands. Let me explain.

Nokia is a little bit like the New Zealand cricket team. It has potential but often doesn't follow through with it. I recently had a look and play around with my partner's iPhone 3GS. Never liked Apple or iPhones before. However, having played around with the iPhone for a few weeks (ad-hoc, here and there), I would like to say Nokia, time to shape up.

Applications are dead easy to install - two taps, you are done. Your screen / system doesn't freeze or stop as it installs either. Menus are extremely smooth and fast. Sure, N97 recently got some new kinetic scrolling too and I congratulate Nokia on that. Compared to say the iPhone, the scrolling is neither smooth or as polished.

Take a look at applications. The iPhone not only has an incredible number of applications and games, new stuff is being added nearly every single day. When you pay, you pay a minimal sum of money. Nokia expects users to pay $5 or even $10 for an application whereas Apple charges can be as low as $1 for an excellent application.

The camera. OK, Nokia brands itself as having CZ optics. How come if you compare a 3mp iPhone shot to the 5mp Nokia N97 shot, you notice that the 3mp picture is not only brighter but with better colours too? I understand the N97 can take wonderful photos and most likely better photos overall. It just makes me wonder if the iPhone can take such good photos at 3mp, imagine a 5mp camera in the future.

Let's stop comparing with the iPhone now and take a look at the Sony Ericsson Satio with a 12mp camera with a proper Xenon flash. Need I say more?

It is sad to see Nokia fall behind like this. The N97 is slow compared to other top-end smartphones. Checking my gmail through my N97 is easy enough bar the fact that I have to wait 5+ seconds to open each e-mail. Probably due to the lack of RAM I suppose.

Anyway, don't get me wrong, been a Nokia fan and supporter for so many years. I don't see myself buying a top-end Nokia in the near future. Even with the N900 - looks really promising and very good specs. The question is, will the OS be polished? Are there going to be really good applications available?

Well, my two cents for the day.

Ok, Today i received a new replacement N97 B-Cover all the way from our buddies in Finland!!!

The B-cover includes new style gps antenna, mic (i think) 3G antenna (i think) and a new design camera slider.

I installed it, and WOW!!! GPS problems, what GPS problems... accuracy is at 10m-20m outdoor constantly and i now get GPS reception indoors -just like my old N82(accurate from 50m-100m).

Also the reception bars at full whereas they used to be just below (could be coincidence but don't think so)

Anyone who owns a N97 needs to get this as it will improve the device.

Coincidently yesterday I got my N97 back after sending it off to Nokia after the little screen lock button decided to fling off (while on a boat going up a river in Bangkok - but I didn't thing that bit was important enough to mention when I dropped the phone off).

The jobsheet shows that they replaced that exact part which, while I thought it was a bit excessive, did also mean my lens is no longer scratched as well.

To be honest I hadn't noticed any major GPS problems before (certainly none now) and I'll reserve judgement on the new lens cover until a few weeks have passed....

Hi Adam,

It took seven weeks to get my part. That is only because he said he didn't want to sell me the old one when the new updated one was arriving soon. I did have to email and find that out though.

Last week I noticed the status had changed on the order page to shipped, and I received it four days later on the Tuesday.

I would recommend them, as they are quite reasonably priced. They just don't communicate very well.

Hi there, long time lurker, first time poster on Geekzone Im quite impressed...I also have a E90 and 5800...E90 now with wife cause she dont like Touch!

The GPS is weak...and I think eventually I will buy the b cover assembly (out of stock)
I've upgraded to version 20
I dont think Im covered with the nokia care centre for repairs.
I found this link..before my accuracy was 40m to 80m outside....now mostly from 14m to 45m does go higher sometims but not as much.
Be careful...it may have some risks.....caution you dont want to bend or break things...i was firm but gentle
