My apartment is wired up with all phone outlets being HPM RJ11 sockets. I have ADSL filters on each phone as well and this makes things messy as I have to have an RJ11->BT adapter and then the ADSL filter and then connected to the phone. I want to convert these all to BT sockets and was hoping on some advice on where to get them. Ideally I would just replace the little snap in RJ11 socket on the inside of the faceplate. Where can I get these from? I live in Auckland Central. Any help would be appreciated.

IMHO the cheapest and easiest way to fix this problem would be to locate some RJ11 ADSL filter or simply crimp a RJ11 plug onto an existing BT ADSL filter.

I'm guessing HPM do a BT jackpoint however if they are anything like the PDL ones they are around $30 each which is a complete and utter rip off.

Try checking with somewhere like Mastertrade or Corys that has a data section and they should be able to help you.

RJ11?, I would suggest its probably a RJ45, how many contacts are there, 4,6 or 8, if the latter its a RJ45, (aka 8way modular connector).

Personally to remove these would be a backward move and as Steve says BT mechs for either PDL or HPM/Clipsal are outrageously overpriced.

Most apartments I have seen that are fitted with RJ45 sockets normally have all the lines in star formation back to a Krone Block in a cupboard somewhere in the apartment. This seems to be a half hearted approch (read cheap skate) to providing some form of structured cabling in future but at the owners expense. This Krone block if it exists will just have the centre pair (pair1 bluepair) all paralleled up and connected to the line, if so I would install a central filter at that point, and then get some RJ45>RJ11 line cords your local Mastertrade/Corys can order these from Dynamix.

Regardless of how its all wired, I think moving to a central filter and using the above cords is an ideal solution, but understanding how your apartment is wired would be my first task. If it is wired as I suggest then you may want to also concider moving the wiring to a more useful state, and put a small patch panel in place of the Krone, site your modem in the cupboard and distribute phone and ethernet around the apartment, but this will require an understanding of how its currently wired.

I did a search on the plug before posting and thought it was RJ11, I thought RJ45 were computer network plugs? Anyway it is the plug that is normally on any standard phone cord that plugs into the phone end.

I was trying to keep my post simple, and negelected to mention I've just recently done exactly what you've suggested in your third paragraph Cryril, and yes you're right that is the setup - with a Krone block in a cupboard which I rewired to have a proper splitter inserted and have the phone sockets coming off one side and on the other side with the main line splitting off to the computer socket. Unfortunately that line also connects out to the Sky so I have to have a Filter on it as well, thus some of the messiness.

I also installed a double BT face plate from DSE to an existing flush mount but it just looks too cheap. But I can't do that to all of them anyway as some of them are combo Phone/Aerial plates. I've looked and never been able to find an RJ11 ADSL filter. Yes I would like a patch panel but can't justify that as I won't be making frequent enough changes. Maybe one day when moving to VOIP.

It's not a big deal, just wanted to finish tidying things up if it was easy to do, Keen to know where a person off the street (ie: not a professional installer) can go to get a better selection of stuff than you can get from DSE etc.

I would be very very surprised if they were RJ11, as they are not endorsed by Telepermit for use in NZ for that application, in Aus yes, here no, RJ45s are however. An RJ11/12 will fit in a RJ45 socket, however its not recommended as it will damage the outer pins of the socket, hence the reason I pointed out the RJ45<>RJ11 line cords.

If you have installed a central filter at the krone block then why put a filter at the Sky box, instead fit a new wall plate with an extra RJ45 socket on, one connected to the direct line for DSL, the other post the filter for the Skybox. Your local Mastertrade/Corys or Russels will sell identical plates to the originals that you have plus RJ45 sockets to suit, if you are having diffeculties working out what you need then PM me and I can sort some bits for you at more appealing prices than over the counter.

Since getting home tonight I have checked and yes they are RJ45 plates - 8 pins inside them, and yes the outer pins are damaged slightly! I didn't realise RJ11/12 would fit in these and that was half the reason I wanted to replace them, as it made little sense having RJ11 or RJ12 sockets everywhere. Data sockets make more sense I guess (for flexibility).

The filter at the PC is acting as a double adapter too, since it is the only unfiltered line from the splitter, I'm sending the ADSL output (RJ11/12) from this second filter to the PC and the phone output (BT) to the Sky along an extension cord (no access into wall). That plate is a 3 way RJ45/F Connector/Normal TV plug, thus the reason just wanting to change the snap in RJ45 only.

I've learnt alot but now I'm not sure what I will do. But might take you up on your offer, thanks Cyril!
