Good Evening all,

I'm just getting back into vinyls after a bit of a hiatus and while I've still got a few records, sadly a turntable is absent. So this is a question to all the vinylphiles on here. What would be the best turntable I could get, all factors included, for around the $150 and under mark? I know I know I'm a cheap bastard and I shouldn't hope for anything more than the sound of nails on a chalkboard for that price, or so I've heard, but surely there's got to be something half decent for that price range? Looking online has only brought more questions than answers so I thought I'd stop lurking on here and just ask.

Thanks for any help

Firstly, do you have an old stereo that will accept a Phono input for the turntable? There are some newer turntables that have their own amplifier and plug straight in to any speaker but I think your best bet is to look on trademe or for a second hand turntable. I've been told that the catridge/needle that you use is very important and so is the amp. I bought mine second hand from this guy.

He lives in Grafton in Auckland. Was very helpful.

I'm looking at one that has have a built in phono pre-amp, and it allows you to connect straight to stereos through a simple 3.5mm jack.

That's very handy, but my one worry with that one is that it ships from the US so it might be a 110v power plug. In which case I'd have to get a step-down power thingy, and I'm concerned that would change the belt speed etc

If it is a NZ retailer then it must be a NZ plug and 220v as required by law.

Yeah you would think so. But fishpond is an American company (http://geoip.flagfox.net/?ip=50.17.220.133&host=www.fishpond.co.nz) so it just left me wondering and the fact they have an email option that's specifically about their products having American plugs is odd.

That IP location is wrong. Check the Companies website. And Fishpond is very much a New Zealand company, based in Auckland.

Their warehouse is close to the AKL airport

But it's shipped from the US, so a US product. The IP location is correct, the server is hosted in the US

The server is located in the US, but the server location doesn't mean it's not a New Zealand company.

It is a US product, but New Zealand companies, selling to New Zealand customers, are required by law to provide products that work in New Zealand, with New Zealand approved power adapter and cords.

If you get one and it doesn't work you have the CGA to protect you.

I don't see what's the problem.

I don't know where you're located, but... I'm in Wellington and just a couple of weekends ago I was up in Greytown meeting some friends for lunch, and stumbled upon Wakefield Antiques. As well as the usual small town "antique" furniture, the guy who runs (or jointly runs) it, Steve, reconditions old stereo gear. I bought a '70s Akai amp, tuner, speakers and turntable, al in excellent condition (except for a few scratches on the back of the perspex turntable cover) and it sounds GREAT! So, a very expensive lunch, but it's all set up in my study and I am loving listening to some vinyl that I haven't heard for almost 20 years. He has some very cool stuff there, and had about three other turntables, so if you live anywhere around there it's worth a look.
