Advice and suggestions please. My brothers in the market for a new tele, and has about $800 to spend. He really wants a big screen, this X series Plasma is on speacial at the moment at Noel Leeming, but I'm loathe to recomend something with that resolution. Anybody got experience with this Toshiba? I can't find much info or any reviews on it. Would the 42 Inch U series be a better buy, it's a Magness Benrow for $800. Any other 'bag-for-buck' teles at that price?

Your instincts are right, 1024x768 isn't enough for a 50" plasma. Low resolution plasmas can suffer from the "screen door" effect where individual cells are visible unless you sit at great distance.

The P42UT50Z is a much nicer television. The catch, and why it's so cheap, is it doesn't have the anti-glare filter the more expensive ST/GT/VT models have. It will be affected by glare under direct sunlight. It shouldn't have its brightness cranked up high to reduce glare as that could cause heavy image retention, being a plasma.

The Toshiba is a 50Hz model which means it would have jerky motion. I don't think a large LCD without motion interpolation is something I could tolerate watching.

I might get him to go and have a look at the Toshibamodel and see if he finds the 50Hz bothering.

+1

In my experience beauty (or in this case picture quality) is often in the eye of the beholder.  I have seen some supposedly pretty high spec TV's on paper, look like absolute crap in real life.

Get your bro to physically look at each one going, and make his mind up from there.

I got a Samsung telly a week ago. I was dubious about the Smart Hub, and thought I would just plug in a laptop or build a HTPC. Turns out Smart Hub plus unblockus.com is *great* - Netflix app, Plex app, YouTube app - all very impressive, and the kids have no problem using it. You'd never know, because these TVs are never plugged into the 'Net in the store.

I hooked the TV onto my network using a cheap Http://www.dlink.co.nz/products/?pid=873

I'm glad I didn't just get a 'big dumb panel', as I had originally intended. If/When the apps all crap out in future, I'll still have the option of plugging in a PC.
