Just returned from the Uk with a new Kindle Paperwhite and was loving it, and made me a convert from real books.

But Amazon ran a update after a few days and instead of enjoying the changing screensavers with amazing artisitic pen shots etc i find now that Waterstones have hijacked the screen with a quote and logo which they say is not advertising and never changes.

Have been offered a refund but dont really want to part with it also not sure how they would do it from here in NZ

This is really just a warning in case you are travelling and can find one, glad Tesco's didint have any stock hate to think what they would put on it

Waterstones reply below
Dear Alan,
Thank you for your email regarding your Kindle Paperwhite from Waterstones. I am sorry you are disappointed by the addition of a Waterstones screensaver after the recent software update to Kindle. It is our view that this screensaver does not constitute advertising and differs substantially to the advertising-supported Kindles available to the US market. The Waterstones screensaver is a non-dynamic, static image that will change infrequently and not advertise any specific product, offer or website.
It is not possible to remove the Waterstones screensaver to replace it with the former Amazon screensaver. We apologise that this change was made without consultation, and hope it does not detract from or alter your reading experience. However, if you feel it does, please let us know and we will arrange for the return of the device and a full refund.
I am sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.
Yours sincerely,
Customer Service Team Waterstones.com

Oh right. So they'd feel the same about putting a competitor's logo on the screensaver.

I wonder if installing the most recent software update for the Paperwhite might help? It could replace a specific Waterstones update with a generic Paperwhite update. Just a guess though.

Otherwise, contact Amazon directly and see what they can do for you.

I was trying to find out more about this deal and see if this is part of it. Found a BBC article on Waterstones and Amazon:

The e-book trend may be inevitable, critics say, but embracing it will only hasten Waterstones's decline. Mr Daunt suggests they misunderstand his methods.

"All that we have to do is encourage people to come into our shops and to choose the books," he says.

"I don't frankly care how they then consume then, or read them, or indeed buy them.

"But if you spend time in my shops, and you really enjoy it, and you come back more often and spend longer - you're going to spend money in my shops."

That money won't necessarily be on books. Waterstones stores are already stocking more stationery, games and puzzles. The next step is to create cafes inside the chain following a successful trial.

"It is literally the booksellers that's made you the cup of coffee," he says. "Yes, it's slightly grubby that you've handed over two quid to get that cup of coffee - but it is extremely nice.

That gave me a chuckle. Reminds me of You've Got Mail (1998) when Joe fox (Tom Hanks) is supervising the new mega store final touches and goes like that:

Joe Fox: Do you know what? We are going to seduce them. We're going to seduce them with our square footage, and our discounts, and our deep armchairs, and...
Kevin: Our cappuccino.
Joe Fox: That's right.

Those guys didn't watch the movie. Bookstores are going out...

I can't blame you for being p'd off , I would be LIVID, and it would be going back, to be sourced from another place. It's the only way they learn. I take it you got the ad supported version? You aware there is one without?

It doesn't seem to be the ad supported, but a Waterstones version of the Kindle with its own screensaver.

Well I'd be very happy with that outcome, Amazon have no responsibility to you to fix that problem :)

I really like Amazon, I have never had a serious issue with them ever and I have done a fair amount of purchasing from them and their Kindle support is seriously excellent.

Agreed there. Waterstones sold a product that has been modified for their own requirements, and you bought from them. The course of action here would be return to the retailer and get a new one, which I imagine is out of question based on their first reply.

Amazon, as usual, did a great job offering a replacement. Did they ask to have this one sent back to them?

As an experiment you could go to a mobile store and buy one of their mobile phones. I am sure it will show the telco's logo on every startup. I doubt you'd find any manufacturer that would replace the phone on the argument that you don't want to see the telco brand on the startup screen.

I will plug again: buy from our Amazon Kindle order page and you get it directly from Amazon - not from DSE, not from Waterstones ;)

Agree am amazed at Amazon replacing the kindle yes i have to send the old one back they are sending me a label to do so.

Would have bought the geekzone way but delays were huge and my sister found me this one in the uk when i was there so i had it for the flight back.

No where do waterstones tell you that they have changes planned for your kindle. Was glad it wasn,t from Tesco(supermarket) they kept expecting stock but wasnt looking likely had plenty of the fire for sale.
