timmmay: Can you take a picture and post it? Does it look anything like the picture I took of mine, page 3 of this thread?

Photos aren't turning out too well but I'll try again in natural light. Those shadows you have on the bottom extend about half-way up the screen on mine. This means that when reading the eyes are continually moving between dark and light which is very tiring. If I drop the light down below 16 I cannot see the text at all in those darker spots - they get completely blacked out.

From what I understand those shadow cones along the bottom are normal with the Paperwhite. Dark smudgy shadows higher up and tinges of colour aren't normal but are an issue Amazon has said they are aware of.

You shouldn't need to take the photo under any light - in a dark room with just the light from the kindle is best, but you may need a decent camera.

"Shadow cones"?  I've recently purchased a Kobo Glo and when I have the light turned on all I see is an even light over the entire surface of the screen.  I know the light comes from the bottom (I read it somewhere) but there are no "shadow cones" anywhere.

Do you mean like this?

I definitely don't see anything like that on my Kobo Glo.

Mine looks more like this:

I too am pretty happy with the lighting on my Kobo glo. I don't really notice any distracting flaws with the lighting. If you look hard enough on the right anlges you might see slight inconsistencies. I haven't seen a paperwhite to compare though. The glo does have it's own weird issues, but genrally pretty good.

I got a Kobo Glo a couple of weeks ago. My major requirement was an edge light, so I can read at night without waking my wife. (I am not wearing a head torch to read at night like my brother-in-law!!) I looked at reviews of the paperwhite and the kobo glo. Comparative reviews seemed to lead to the Glo being pretty good, and there quite a few mentions of screen differences -

- Problems like described in this thread on the paperwhite
- colour casts on the paperwhite
- uneven lighting on the paperwhite.

Perhaps I am also a little biased against Amazon because of their reprehensible wiping of books on people's Kindles a few years ago. Anyway I love my Kobo. Like the Paperwhite I have had a few accidental page turns. But overall I am very happy.

Good to hear that you like your Kobo.  A new firmware has just been released in the last few weeks; one of the things I've noticed is that Kobo seem very good at releasing updates to their firmware every couple of months with new features added.
