When I set up Xtra mail on my iPad, I just type in my xtra email address and password, and Yahoo as the provider and it works.

WHen I try the same method on my Windows phone - it does not work. Does anyone know why (or is it temporary probelm related to recent down time)?

Also, how do you set it up, so that the sent mails are stored on the mail server so if I send an email from (say) my iPad email client, then When I access my Xtra mail using Outlook on my Windows phone, I can see the email in the sent folder.

I had not been able to sync my Xtra sent folder across multiple clients / devices since they switched to Yahoo a few years ago. [The inbox sync's fine].

I beleive it is becuase telecom is basically yahoo mail, and apple devices will automatically get those settings with some of the free providers, eg gmail, hotmail, yahoo. For other providers you have to set them up manually.

Getting IMAP working with yahoo is a bit of a pain - there is some kind of process you need to go through. Does Windows phone offer Yahoo as a provider in their list though?

Yeah - it does. But typing in your xtra email and password returns the mesage "We could not find the settings for the account information you entered .."

If I set it up witth iMAP, will it sync the sent folder (in addition to inbox)? If it does, Do you know where I can find the IMAP?

Did this 2 days ago on my droid..

Setup an imap type account.

imap.mail.yahoo.com SSL:993
yourusername@xtra.co.nz & PW as normal. (it needs the domain reference)

send.xtra.co.nz SSL:456. Require sign-in an same again

And yes. This will allign the stores. By default the interrogation sets up Pop3

I would free yourself from being shackled to ISP provided email:

1: Signup for a gmail account, configure the gmail account mail fetcher to pull email from xtra account into your gmail account.

2: Connect your phone and other email clients to gmail.

3: Tell everyone that your new email address is the gmail.

4: Over time change all your newsletter subscriptions to use the gmail address.

5: Eventually your xtra account won't receive any important email and you can the ditch the account.

Congratulations you are now free from ISP provided email, meaning it's easier to change ISP.

Note 1: If you want to take it a step further replace #1 with registering your own domain name and signing up for Google Apps Free edition.

Note 2: You could replace Gmail/Google apps with Microsoft Windows Live for Custom Domains however I don't believe it has IMAP support.

Thank you!!

Great - I got my Xtra email working on my Windows phone:
- Select Add an Acco8nt -> Advanced setup
-> Enter above server details and check 'Outgoing server require authentication' checkbox and ''Use SSL" and 'Use the same username and password for sending email" checkboxes. It does not need the SSL port numbers.

It works great with the incoming mail.

With the outgoing mails, go to the folder and press Sync.

WARNING: When you do a sync from the Windows phone, it overwrites the Yahoo sent folder with the items in the device's sent folder. Be cautious with this feature. I lost old messages that was in my sent folder on the Yahoo Pro mail web client!!! It did not matter - as I had them backed up to another folder - but could have been disastrous.
