My adsl speed has dramatically changed in the past few days. I am on Telecom and live in Upper Riccarton, Christchurch.

This was my speed 2 days ago:


and today it is:
 - why is this happening? yesterday it was like 1.05 down and 0.2 up with 355 ping?????????????

aren't speeds suppose to get faster and faster by year?? cuz this is what i got in January 2012:

What speed do you get from the following speedtest?

I also note above you have used three different speedtest servers.

Lease make sure you read the discussion about house wiring in our Broadband forum.

Always use the same server for testing.

Never do tests over wireless.

I did it on Telecom.co.nz and i got
down = 6.28 mbps
up = 0.57
ping = 123

its not as bad as i think (:

and
I can only do wireless, My ethernet cable is plugged into a slow computer which need hooked up.

Wireless tests are unreliable because of the possibility of interference from other sources.

No one will take wireless tests seriously.

Honestly, a full 90% of speed related issues I have diagnosed for customers *completely* disappear when plugged in via a cable instead.

"But it cant be that cause its been great for years, something ELSE has changed"
"Theres no one around for 100s of metres so it CANT be my wireless"
"My BROTHER installed the wireless, and HE knows what he is doing"
"This wireless gear cost me $400 last week/year/decade/millenium so it ISNT that"
"You DON'T know what you are talking about, it MUST be at the ISP end, fix it NOW"

^^^^ over and over again, all fixed diagnosed as a WiFi equipment/signal issues by plugging into router with ethernet cable.

Have you hit your broadband cap and been throttled?

I just clicked on 'recommended server' on speedtest, and yes I have hit my broadband cap which is 30gb but as I said earlier Telecom have been giving us unlimited(so no throttling) since  22 february chch earthquakes and this is the lowest speed it has ever got since then. My cap is only 30gb and I have used 180gb. Unfortunately this service is going to stop on 14th and my dad is cheap and only wants to upgrade to 50gb ):

you didn't say that in this thread. It would have been very helfpul to know that.


Maybe telecom have decided that more than a year of unlimited broadband is enough for people in Christchurch, especially the ones using 180GB on a 30GB plan

haha ok, my dad is to cheap to get like orcon's unlimited plan, he would rather upgrade to 50gb, like that is going to help

Presumably you and your sibling are using lots of data, why not offer to throw in the extra $20 and get 150GB

Also if you have been a Telecom custom for a year or two, ring up and ask for customer retentions then ask them if they can offer you a loyalty discount (usually $10/month).

my dad thinks 50gb is enough for us, and if i tell him we use 100+, well im screwed. He will probably change to dial-up

The significant backend broadband infrastructure upgrade which because you have a Tivo meant that you were un-metered for a period of time is now complete (it finished about 3 weeks ago from memory).  So you will be back to your regular metered plan and it would be quite possible that you exceeded your cap and thus were throttled.

It may be worth logging in either with your Xtra account or your YourTelecom account and checking to ensure you're not over your cap.

what does it have to do with Tivo?? I don't get it
and no I have not been throttled - On my 30gb plan, I have used 220gb and this is my speed right now
