Any other ex Xtra customers get an email on the 9th Oct stating:

"If you use Flickr, then you'll know that your Flickr account is linked to your Xtra email. For that reason your Flickr account will also be suspended on 28 November 2012 so you won't be able to access any photos or albums on your Flickr account. To regain access to your photos you will need to reinstate your Xtra email account within 50 days from the 28 November 2012. After this time your Flickr account will be disconnected permanently and any photos saved on Flickr will be lost."

I found the older items in the Forum but nothing recent. I got the following from Telecom on Twitter:

"Have you looked into changing your Flickr email to another address, then simply paying the Flickr Pro levy yourself?"

When I tried this is what I got:
"Yahoo! Broadband Partner users are not authorized to transfer their Flickr account to another Yahoo! ID"

Telecom have now lost interest in responding to my questions.

I have over 2200 photos in there and looks like Im going to lose the lot.

Wow, this is absolutely abysmal.  How can they justify this?  Why won't they allow you to change your email address?

You didn't say, but it sounds like you've closed your Telecom broadband account? You can pay a monthly fee to keep the @xtra.co.nz email address if you want - and keep the Flickr Pro account.

If you are willing to pay Yahoo! directly, why not pay the monthly Telecom fee to keep the email address and therefore the Flickr Pro account?

What's the price difference?

It's been standard practice for at least 4 years now to disable and remove Xtra accounts that are no longer Telecom customers.  For some reason you managed to slip through the cracks when you ceased to be a Telecom customer that your Xtra and by extension your Flickr Pro account wasn't disabled.

Feel free to email me pl at telecom dot co dot nz and I will see what can be done.  Since you no longer have an active account with Telecom I am not sure much can be done unless you or someone else you know are a Telecom customer that wants to look after the Xtra & Flickr account as it was associated with your Telecom Account, which from the sounds of it is closed and has been for some time.

Thanks for the quick responses - I'm not longer a Telecom customer. Don't really want to be forced into having to continue to pay for Telecom for the privelege of maintaining the account. HAppy to pay Flickr directly for that :-)

suppose I could try rarking up Yahoo or Flickr themselves too.

Or has I have advised him just now check out the new Broadband plans as they are pretty compelling and include the Xtra & Flickr Pro accounts as part of the service.

This; provided it's not significantly more expensive.


(Not trying to be facetious or anything but this is also a good example of why you shouldn't rely completely on "the cloud" to keep your data)

Just a Flickr Pro account is a huge amount cheaper than paying Telecom for a dialup account, email address, Flickr Pro account and some other benefits which escape me right now.

A 12 month Flickr Pro account works out at about $2.50 NZD/month.

I'm not sure if Telecom email prices are different now, but I pay $2.50 a month to keep my old @xtra.co.nz email address alive. Not actively using it but it's not a big amount to pay.

A long time ago the price was approx $2.95 to keep your @xtra.co.nz email address if you didn't have some form of Internet account with Telecom. Things changed when Telecom partnered with Yahoo to host email, provide Flickr Pro and McAfee security suite for Xtra customers.

The change meant that in order to keep your email account (and Flickr Pro), you needed to have an active Internet access account of some sort with Telecom (Dialup will do) and the cost if someone JUST wanted to keep their @xtra.co.nz address became the price of the cheapest internet account.

Personally, I haven't used any ISP supplied email address since my Efficient Software (@es.co.nz) address from 1994 but I understand many people do and are very resistant to change because of the number of contacts or advertising with the old address. There is a way to keep that address but unfortunately there's no way to separate out just the email address from the entire Yahoo package.

This probably relates to the same letter sent to all customers who are currently paying $2.95/month for email only. Telecom will be dropping this from 28/11/2012 and if you want to keep it you will need to pay $20/month for a dial-up account.

Oh, well. If this is the case I will just drop then. I don't store my photos on Flickr, only use it for conference, etc - don't need a pro thing for it them. And I'm not overly attached to my @xtra.co.nz email address anyway, haven't used for ages.

Not sure that is correct that the $2.95 email only plan is being retired... I am pretty sure that if you were on that plan and still paying your bill that anything is changing for those people (as MF said he is on that plan and still paying for his Xtra account).?

It's more of if you used to be a Telecom customer and no longer have any service with us you can't get the email only plan, the cheapest plan Telecom offer if you have no services with us is the dialup only for $20 per month.

I could be wrong here, but I'm pretty sure that's the case.

Edit: I found out if you have a Mobile Broadband Plan you can also associate your xtra email to that account as well, which if you ring up 123 they should be sort you out with the exact details of the offer.

From reading the terms as I understand it (and I could be wrong here) you need either
- Dialup account
- Fixed Broadband Service
- Mobile Broadband Service

As long as you have one of the above, then the xtra account and thus flickr pro is included with the deal.

Thanks all - I left Telecom/xtra for a reason - dont want to return, dont want to pay anything to them per month, not $2.95 or $20 or even (wasnt expecting to be given a sales pitch on here either) to return to one of the broadband packages.

I dont understand how they say that all photos will be "lost" - as Flickr states:

"Are my photos ever deleted?

No, your photos will not be deleted, unless you do it yourself, or fail to play by our Community Guidelines."

So how does that work?

I'm a photographer, have family photos in their, shared albums etc with family in the UK, belong to local photographers clubs and have contact with other photographers in NZ :-(
