so, am just wondering if I have misread something.  What do people think of this advert on telecoms page

http://store.telecom.co.nz/mobile/personal/phone-details/samsung-galaxy-ace-2-black/prepaid

specifically

Heaps of storageComes with a whopping 4GB internal memory for all your files and photos.

Brought two of these phones and love them, but started to wonder why Kies showed only 1gb of internal memory, so I wrote Samsung.

Their reply.

total internal memory is 4gb, however part of this is reserved for the main operating system on the phone and default applications, this reserved partition you will not have access to

I'll just get some extra memory, but seriously is it just me or has telecom mislead with their advert?

This is standard practice at the moment with most companies.

I have seen some starting to specify the approximate amount of capacity left after the OS and other apps.

Telecom should have at least put in an asterisk for more info on what the 4GB means.

It seems to be a common theme ... the user guide being the only place it mentions the OS usage.

GSMArena (http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_ace_2_i8160-4559.php)

Internal     4 GB storage, 768 MB RAM

User Guide (http://www.telecom.co.nz/digital-content/assets/documents/mobile/samsung-galaxy-ace-2-userguide.pdf)

The actual available capacity of the internal memory is less than the specified capacity because the operating system and default applications occupy part of the memory.

Huge 4GB memory capacity and powerful battery also support extensive and great usage.

Store more, thanks to 4GB embedded memory

it does, at least to me seem like false advertising on telecom's part by not listing the actually amount of internal memory for personal use

Dear Telecom,

I feel misled by your advertising claims regarding this phone. It does have 4GB storage, but only 1GB accessible for storing items that you say there is 4GB for.

Can I please get a refund? Or perhaps a 4GB microSD card to boost the accessible storage to the claimed amount?

Regards,

alienwithin

I suspect that carriers only publish what the manufacturer gives them..

actually Tony, I don't want a refund, I like the phone and simply put 16gb in each phone. But the wording on their advert does need to be changed when it says "Heaps of storage Comes with a whopping 4GB internal memory for all your files and photos"

I'll talk to the web site / branding folks and see what can be done.

I work for Telecom, but as always my views are my own.

Keep in mind that almost all other manufacturers list the total memory, not the memory accessible on the data partition. (this includes memory cards and usb drives)

Apple products are all sold in a 16/32/64 etc variant but no one seems to complain about there only being 13gb of accessible space on a 16gb iPhone.

I guess it's more a matter of wording that's the problem as they are drawing attention to the memory. But even so, I don't think it's that big a deal.

Also as mentioned earlier, it's likely that they are just working off the specs given to them by the OEMs
