Just received:

DEEP-SEA CABLE CUT AFFECTS XTRA EMAIL CUSTOMERS

A cut in a deep-sea cable between Australia and Singapore is currently affecting Telecom Xtra customers.

Customers may be experiencing delays on the delivery of mail they have sent from their Xtra email addresses. There is no impact on the receiving of emails to xtra.co.nz accounts.

Telecom is advising customers to check with their email recipients if they are sending urgent communication and to resist resending emails as this could create congestion.

Telecom’s Xtra service provider, Yahoo! utilises a submarine cable out of Perth to Singapore to transit some of its email traffic.

Whilst cable repairs are underway, Yahoo has re-routed mail traffic away from the impacted cable and is working to clear the delayed email queues.

Telecom will continue to provide updates on its websites regarding expected service restoration but at this stage it is unlikely to be today.

that'd explain why sea.battle.net has been lagging in general.  It's a pity there isn't much redundancy to Singapore, and China, and a lot of US hosts like Yahoo, Google, etc all host there for NZ.

Did this relate to the Telecom DNS outage last night?

Nope.. that's completely unrelated.

The Singapore cable got cut about 5-6 days ago and the DNS issue was with internal Telecom servers.

I work for Telecom, but as always my views are my own.

Vocus says the email problems are due to Telecom not peering:

I am still getting people on Xtra say they've sent emails to our organisation, but we don't receive them. The Telecom website says all fixed now.

Yeah but Telecom could argue traffic balance between Vocus and Telecom is in Vocus favour and they should pay for interconnection/transit in NZ not just rely on APE/WIX peering.

Where's the customers' advocate when we need the person?

i think it's probably reasonable for telecom to peer in sydney actually.

When it makes sense commercially Telecom and Telstraclear will peer at APE/WIX again (where Vocus already has a presence). They have almost lost enough residential and business market share to competitors for the tripping point where peering is viable vs using market share to leverage transit/interconnection revenue.

It will be interesting to see what Vodafone does once it absorbs Telstraclear, the cozy Telecom Telstraclear free interconnection arrangement could fall over, if Vodafone continues to peer openly.

Peering in Australia is arguably even more messed up in NZ (gang of four) due to regulation in the 90's which established very restrictive peering. It should be a warning to anyone calling for regulation to fix the problem....
