LennonNZ: I just heard on the radio that Xtra has said its not their or Yahoo's faults its happening and they have nothing to do with it.

 (But you know the Media)

WEll on telecoms own status page they say quote

Quote - Whilst Yahoo confirmed yesterday morning that this issue was resolved, we continue to monitor for further examples to ensure the problem has not resurfaced.

So it does sound like they have confirmed that yahoo did have a problem, but it has been fixed. That contradicts the story in the media.

andynz:
Sorry for the rant but when you get lied to by Xtra, as we all have been today, it's time to remind Xtra/Telecom of what a terrible dreadful poor service they offer and how customer don't appreciate being treated like fools.

I think the media has misreported it, if you read telecoms status page. NZs media sometimes aren't the sharpest tools in the shed, and stories to do with telecom always rate well, tall poppy syndrome and all that.

THey really need an impetus to move away from Yahoo. Perhaps this is it?

I agree that a simple email stating "There is a problem" would be the first step for Xtra customers.
The comments following that article are classic. Telecom are just digging themselves a deeper hole...

I totally agree about the simplification of the press however I have not used my Xtra account for many months and didn't click on the link that cam through.  An email was sent to contacts previously emailed moths or years ago.  I fail to see how the problem has anything to do with me.

The rant was based on many many years of experience with Xtra/Telecom customer service,  Having had many clients in the past who used Xtra for various services I wasted many many hours of unbillable time trying to sort out Xtra problems.

I could write a very long list of past problems, but I doubt you want to hear them and I really can't be bothered going over them again.

Onwards and upwards to a brighter xtraless future.

I am wondering how peoples privacy relates to this problem. The emails I have been getting from people I know, also includes the email addresses from their addressbook the CC field, so I can see all the people they have emailed. They may not want me to know the contents of their address book and who they email.

Ok, so I have managed to send myself an email, from my Xtra email address, to my work address, whilst sleeping.
Interestingly, the message does not appear in my sent items.
I am not an email expert, can anyone explain this?

The full update from us (Telecom) team - appreciate the consternation over the 'Phishing statement'. That was correct at the time we shared it with the press etc, but the situation has obviously moved on since. Apologies to all those affected, or if you have fielded phone calls from your folks etc (!).

Sure.  The Yahoo mail system was compromised which is independent of your own computer.

Perhaps I did not explain properly...

I am talking about the sent items box within my Xtra system i.e. that which I see when I log into my webmail.

I believe the situation is that once your contact information had been aquired spam emails would not need to be sent through your mailbox so would not show in your sent folder.  Anyone care to correct me if I am wrong?

Hi Mike, you will not see anything in the sent items folder even on the web interface, your contacts list was harvested by this rouge who then sent the emails outside of the Yahoo system.

A copy of mail sent only gets filed there by the mail client (be it webmail or a client on your PC).  Mail sent "from" your account (ie. via SMTP) does not automatically get filed there by the mail system.  Mail delivery and mailbox storage are totally seperate mechanisms.  HTH!
