what's with this apalling new intrusive advertising on geekzone.

I don't mind advertising but I'll be out of here if this is what the future holds.

Noticed the same thing earlier myself and found it rather distasteful, Hope it isn't intended on becoming standard.

We try lots of stuff, every day - some stuff you don't see behind the scenes, some stuff you see in front of you.

We have a TradePub account with hundreds of free magazines, books, white papers available to our users. We also have a problem that our users have the habit of not looking at menus. I know this because before a lot of people couldn't find the SEARCH link in the menu bar at the top, forcing us to place a search box in every page, making the whole experience slower because the Google search box is a script (and no we are not allowed to change the code).

Because we have this vast resource that is FREE and no one uses I am testing to see if there's any difference with a box that slides out. I thought being no different from the kind of boxes that people see in other sites there would be an interesting test.

Fair point. No way to know, but to try. I fully understand the need for ads or better yet subscriptions to keep this place running.

I too fully agree, however most other sites that have the pop-out advertising also provide a way for the viewer to close it when they have finished reading. Unless I am mistaken from my quick visit last night there was no way to get rid of the new window.

That is "slideout" (not a popup or popunder because those will not be hosted here). When you scroll the page down almost to the bottom it will appear docked on the bottom right, when you scroll the page up it disappears.

This is exactly my problem with it as it doesn't seem to be functioning as intended.

In Firefox the box would slide out when reaching 'near' the bottom of the page but in Chrome for me it was regularly popping out from about thirty to fourty percent down the page and obscuring content.

Any advertising that obscures content without a way to make it get out of the way is a bad thing.

Slightly related, but the search box (top'ish right of screen) is now covered on my 1920x1080 resolution monitor:

I recommend getting a subscription. Really cheap and then you get no ads at all. It means you have more screen space for real geekzoning, not to mention the page loads are so much faster

Agreed - And because I have a subscription, I haven't noticed any of these issues (as no ads are displayed).

Geekzone Subscribers get really fast page loads because those pages don't even have the code to load the ads - they're smaller and don't need to be "filtered" locally by any add-ons.

It seems the slideouts have been removed today - which is good to see.

As I said previously - I don't mind the advertising - as long as it doesn't obstruct the content (but if it does there should be a close / minimise option)

I dont like it.  I am not against it and would be perfectly happy with it being in the corner IF it had a close button.

What about a bar at the bottom of the page instead, under the copyright notice?

I dont think that would be good for advertisers as it would be right at the bottom.  The way it comes out at you at the moment is good for the advertiser and I wouldnt mind it if it had a close button.
