I'd be more in favor of being able to mute someone from further contributing to a given thread if they are given enough dislikes by others active in the thread.

I like this better, however I can see it just becoming very contentious. It's going to become very cliquey here.

Personally, I'm more in favour of the "Ignore" functionality present in other commercial forum scripts. You can ignore a person, but all that happens is instead of seeing their posts you see "1 post(s) ignored from (user). Click here to show anyway" and if you click it the full post appears as if by magic (JS element hiding clearly ;))

Yeah, ban those with minority views.

I like it.

Yes, that's more like what I was thinking. This is pretty much plonking anyway.

I wouldn't agree with Plonking, as someone said before, it causes tension and is sometimes confusing to read. Then people won't want to come back to GZ..:(

Big +1 for this!

+1

I was actually going to request this the other day but thought there wouldn't be much in favour

Hmmm. So what's the problem here then? "Plonk" in my view (and by definition) is when YOU put someone into an ignore list that is for YOUR use only, not affecting anyone else. That's what I was thinking, and that's what Kyanar suggested.

How can filtering your personal view can "create[s] tension on the forums"?

freitasm: Would you folks have use for a "PLONK" button here on Geekzone?

Only if we also get an "I told you so, but you wouldn't listen." button.

Maybe people think its visible to others, whereas it's only filtering what you see not others

As I said, I think people here are under the impressions that "plonk" applies to everyone's view, when in fact it's a user preference - a filtered view.

Quoting from Wikipedia:

Plonk is a Usenet jargon term for adding a particular poster to one's kill file such that the poster's future postings are completely ignored.

I think some people either

a) didn't participate in Usenet much
b) didn't read the link in my OP.
