Topic # 87053 18-Jul-2011 18:27 Send private message

Folks... I have implemented a small change in our Google-powered search page.

First, gone is the Google Search field on top of all pages. I've done that because it was yet another script to load in all pages. This will save some bandwidth for you, and reduce page load time. Every time a script loads a kitten dies.

Also the new search implements better pagination and controls, including a tabbed filter that allows you to select All results, Forums results or News/Reviews results. With time I might add a few more tabs for the top blogs there.

It would be nice to be able to sort by chronological order

To order in chronological order Google needs to index a new tag, which we have added with this change.

Nice improvements.

The 99% width on the search input looks a bit odd on large screens, maybe give it a max-width via css that should restrict it for large screens and still let it max out for smaller screens and mobile.

IE6 and maybe IE7 will ignore it but a nice progressive enhancement for everyone else.

I'd also increase the height and font size of both the search input and the search button.

Probably. But only when you search. Before, it was on every single page served. Much less kittens dying now, right?

Chronological order will be really helpful :)

Definitely better than it was F

But I still get a bit lost: I'm used to being in forums where you can choose to search the subforum you are in, or all of them etc.

(re getting lost: not very hard for me to do ;) )

Yes, the problem with searching subforums is that we rely on Google for the search engine. An alternative would be to create our own index, but I am not sure results would have the relevance Google can provide.

You certainly wouldn't from SQL Server Full Text Search or a custom SQL query.  However have a look at Lucene.NET http://incubator.apache.org/lucene.net/

It's pretty popular now, used by stackoverflow, codeproject and quite a few other sites:

The frontpage says it all: "Get invovled (sic)".

Seriously folks, a bit more of care is required. Read this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-14130854
