Hi All,

I've been having a bit of trouble with our internet the last week with the download speed being 0.2Mbps and the upload being 0.7Mbps. I've fixed it so not a problem there, we're back to 5.4Mbps download and 0.7Mbps upload (speedtest.net). 

I've been doing a bit of reading while trying to fix this problem and I've noticed that we're now allowed maximum upload and download speeds according to the Vodafone website, however our connection used to be capped at roughly this upload speed in the past.

Question: Is our upload speed still being capped or is this a physical limitation of our system? We're in the red zone if that's any help.

What model modem do you have? You could be connecting with ADSL1 rather than ADSL2+, which could be due to a setting in the modem, or a limitation of the modem if it is an older one.

These speeds are VERY low for the Red network. I'm quite sure close to 100% of Red network exchanges will have cabinetised areas beyond first 2-3Km, so anything less than 10-12Mbps on the Red network, some thing is wrong.
Do you have a master splitter installed?

Where did you read this (link please)? Only the ' Basic ' plan is capped on the UL speed of 128k and you are getting above this,

What plan are you on?

The modem is a Vodafone supplied one, SmartAX MT882 with a d-link DIR-300 being used for wireless. I have not tried removing the d-link from the setup and testing again, I'm happy to do so though. I've checked through the settings on the modem and it's running in G.dmt.bisplus mode. I've done a bit of background reading on it (which is why I've taken a little while to reply) and it seems this is the same as ADSL2+. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I have forced the modem into ADSL2+ mode but it doesn't seem to make a difference (I'm speculating here) so I put it back in Auto so I wasn't changing too many things at once while trying to track down the problem.

Nick, I've read through sbiddles page, it's a little bit beyond my skill level. I did run my address through the Chorus website and it shows I can get ADSL2+, we're in the pink zone if that's any help. I don't really suspect it's a Vodafone issue, I was just throwing the idea out there to get everyone thinking.

There is a master splitter installed, we have had it replaced in the past after we had issues with it, if you think there's any benefit, I can look into it again.

Hi John, sorry, that was my mistake converting speeds from kbps from Mbps. We're on the Ideal Pack Red. When I meant in the past, I was meaning way back when we were with ihug ;-) I haven't looked into the upload speed recently as wasn't something I needed as much. 

Hopefully I have answered everyones questions. Thanks for helping me out on this!

Back with ihug there was a point where it was advertised as 800kbps up. This didn't reflect any capping on ihugs end but simply reflected that at the time you were unlikely to see speeds greater than 800kbps up.

Your sync speed suggests you should be getting ~800kbps throughput.

If you go back to the Chorus address thingy, run your address, and a little way down in that right column, you should see "ADSL2+ Details". Below this it will say either "Service area" or "Cabinet Name" - what do you get?

That modem is fairly modern, so it shouldnt be an issue with the capability of your modem.

Your upload speed is perfectly normal compared to your upload sync rate.

As John said, if there was a cap, it would be 128kbps as this is the cap on BB basic - other than that, all plans are fs/fs

If anything it is your download speed that is worth a second look at. Your attenuation isn't great but I would still expect to see a better download speed. Even if there is a fault effecting your download speed I would not expect your upload speed to really get much better than it is.

Yeah Henderson area.

So to sum up everything so far: Upload speed is acceptable, download speed should be looked into. I should be capable of roughly 10Mbps. The problem isn't my modems age & the splitter is working fine based off the stats.

Hmm, I may have to rethink this one unless anyone has any bright ideas of what to try. I might try track down another modem to try when I get a chance.

Evening all. I thought I'd report back on this. I've been spending a little bit of time on the phone to the lovely Vodafone helpdesk & they sent us out a new modem, thinking it was a hardware issue (fair enough too, we had tried a lot of other things already). Plugged it in, no dice. Jonathan from the helpdesk rebuilt the ports on his side of things and it seemed to have come right (I don't claim to understand that part). The good speeds have returned.
