Hi All,

My Girlfriend recently moved into a new apartment and is attempting to have Naked DSL set up.

Vodafone contacted her asking for the PSTN number for the apartment which the landlord/bodycorp were not able to provide.

The previous tenants did not have a phone line set up at all so we can't go to them for the number either.

Vodafone said that in that case, new wiring will be required and that they need access to the PABX room for rewiring. The property manager came back with: 'The body corp are adamant that access should not be required for rewiring purposes'

What are our options? I guess worst case, she will be able to share one of the neighbours connections via wifi...

Cheers

Surely Vodafone would just need the cable address of the apartment. They probably ascertain this from the previous phone number.

The landlord should have the cable address, otherwise you could try the local council?

Others may have more specific advice on this

If access isn't needed for rewiring then put the order in. If it turns out they do need access then the Chorus tech will leave a card with his direct phone number and you can organize with the body corp from there.

Yea they just need to find the cable tracings. Vodafone will tell you it's a new connection but after Chorus have been it will be noted down as an intact connection and you won't pay a full install cost. They will probably need access to wherever the demarc for the building is though. Just to join the wire that goes to your apartment to the Chorus network.

Thanks all,

We had a chorus tech come in who asked for the access which was denied by the body corp...

My girlfriend called Telstraclear inquiring about a new connection and let them know what happened. They are sure that they'll be able to sort it out so we'll see what happens.

Sounds more like the body corp dont understand what youre wanting to do.... just tell them you need a phoneline and theyll probably go ahead with it.

Chorus is still Chorus if sent by Vodafone or Telstraclear or any other ISP

They know exactly what we're trying to do - They are being quite unreasonable saying 'We are adamant that this access should not be required' without providing any help about what we should do from here.

We've heard from a few of the neighbours that these guys are hard to deal with

So the issue is with the Body corp not any ISP

It sounds like the power has gone to their heads...

Can you get a face to face meeting with a person in the body corp and try and reason with them / point out what ..... they are being?

So theyre bascially denying your girlfriend a phone service...

But +1 what dolsen said - a face to face might get the point across.

Call the landlord and tell them if you cant get the phone on you will walk away from the tenancy...

Get him to tell the bodycorp (of which he is a part owner)  to pull their head in......

To be fair, whilst it may seem obvious to us what the situation is, the people running the body corp could just not understand the situation. They have probably been told that the whole complex is fully wired and there is no need for new lines to be installed as this was done when the apartments were built and changing the wires may invalidate some guarantee they have.

What they don't understand is that, while there may be no need to install new wires, as they are not able to provide the correct information as to which wires are connected to the apartment, there is a need for access to identify the current wires, assuming that they are connected.

They have stated that
'The body corp are adamant that access should not be required for rewiring purposes'

which is probably correct.

But, that doesn't preclude that access is required for identification purposes, unless they can provide that information.

Funny you should say that because my girlfriend just received a call from Telstra - same story as before.. as expected :P

Thanks everyone for the advice! The next step for us will be a face to face meeting with the body corp (we've heard some horror stories so wish us luck!).

If we can get over this hurdle, she'll switch back to Voda as their pricing suits her better.

@Johnr: Yep - our problems aren't to do with Vodafone so this can be moved into a different forum :)

It doesn't matter who you go with, Chorus will come. The Chorus tech needs to put the cable that comes from your GF's apartment on to the correct pair in the demarc. Tell your body corp to stop being stubborn a-holes and give the tech access.
