Depending on what valley you mean you live in... On the road over the hill? The only provider with a tower at the top of the hill is Vodafone at the top of the Ohope side, above where they benched it back at the top of the passing lanes. The Telecom towers are down the bottom of the hill (opposite the primary school at Ohope) and in Whakatane

You might find trying a Vodafone handset at your location is not a bad move.

Thanks. If you're familiar with Whakatane, I live on a road that comes off Appenzell drive. If I draw a straight line it looks like I'm half way between the telecom tower in Kope and the vodafone one at the top of the hill.

I don't know how the tower proximity determines coverage at the different frequencies, but anecdotally for whatever reason people seem to have more trouble here with vodafone than telecom.

But I will try and get hold of a vodafone SIM so I can do some testing with my phone.

QoS I can understand, but security seems a bit strange. It's not like Vodafone DSL connections are scarse, and I'd be surprised if VF's network wasn't secure already. As far as I'm aware, AT&T's femtocells establish an IPSec connection to the network, which in theory should be good enough for here.

Ideally you could say "I'm fine with this being unsupported and may have quality issues." I'd imagine occasional dropouts are better than no service at all. And probably infrequent if the ISP peers with VFNZ at NZIX/APE etc.

Keep in mind they may also be using it as a way of pushing VF broadband plans. I suppose it's a matter of weighing up how many more mobile customers they would get by allowing it on any broadband provider, vs how many broadband customers they miss out on. As well as QoS of course as mentioned earlier.
