Why does that matter? I am topping it up from a loaded card which is a NZ post product, my bank should have nothing to do with it but is bankdirect which is part of asb

Thought I would try registering the card and that went thru ok and I have the texts to say it worked, still getting this when trying to top it up tho..

I was thinking of another way you could try and topup,

Is anyone else having issues topping up a Prepay account using a credit card?

nitrotech: It's just an authorisation charge that gets reversed several weeks later.

I've got no idea why Vodafone do it if you pay say 100 they charge the 100 and a 1 authorisation - it seems to take them forever to release it back again.

So in short it's not just you it happens every time I make a cc payment.

there is an easy way to either fix the problem or make some money, Inform Vodafone that there will now be money usage charges for this $1, some thing reasonable for the cost of your time to check that this $1 is actually been returned to your credit card, $30 sounds fair. make it their choice either stop the $1 charge and reversal several weeks later or it will cost $30.

That is NOT how to solve this, or any other problem. It's a complete waste of everyones time. There is no legitimate way to make such a claim nor expect payment.

Looks like Richms has not activated the prepay number by calling 777 and setting a PIN after chatting to him on twitter

freitasm: That makes no sense... If the auth fee is used to find if the credit card is valid, then why not go for the full top up amount?

If it's declined, end of the story. If it is accepted, end of story.

As it is, the auth transaction is an unnecessary overhead in terms of time seeing this is for one-off transactions.

Also the auith amount is held by the credit card company until a "timeout" passes. It never leaves the account, but the customer can't use that dollar because it's on hold for a certain amount of time - usually a week.

Yah I must admit after reading the vf explanation this is what occurred to me as well. I do considerable volumes each month on CC's and I've not seen this before on an ongoing basis.

so thinks about this, you head on down to the gas station to top up the gas tank in your car, you want $20 of gas. The guy at the counter says "pay first", "no problem, here use my eftpos card to take $20". You hand off your eftpos card and notice that that only $1 is showing on the eftpos machine, the gas station guy says "Yeah, we just want to make sure that you have a valid card before we do another transaction for $20, we will do a reversal in 1-7 days".

Would anybody be willing to part with $1 on every eftpos transaction for 1-7 days?, I think not!

Like a previous poster said make the full charge, If it works good, if it doesn't too bad, if a company want's use of the money for 1-7 days then they need to pay for that use and seen it's your money or your credit card balance then you get to set the terms not the gas station or the phone company

Right, I agree with the sentiment but not in the slightest with your proposed "solution". Threatening to backcharge them is just.. Pointless (Put as politely as I could manage).

I don't agree with the VF practice, and I can't see a legitimate reason for it, but there are much better ways to voice your opinion.

What it comes down to is that these companies take every chance they can by introducing a charge for this that and the other thing and we have consumers only have the choice on which company gets to wrought us of these extra charges.

Now here  we have an chance to introduce a charge, so I say lets make the most out of it, if vodafone don't like it then they can stop making this $1 charge and it all goes away.

Ok I can't really understand why you don't understand, since it's been mentioned about 5 times already, that you aren't actually being charged that $1 in a permanent manner, it gets removed from your account a few days later.

Unfortunately I think I'm just wasting my time.

If you cancel a credit card, the bank can still debit your other accounts. It's a rather unpleasant thing when people use their VISA debits/credit cards for dodgy website. Merely cancelling the card just passes the debt onto the bank, who will then recover it.

Seems an unusual way to pay your bill? Is it a prepaid card essentially? Why wouldn't you just AP/DD from your account or DD off a credit card?
