Vodafone New Zealand has released new prices for mobile data roaming. It's a good step, but in my opinion it's still too expensive. The best alternative in terms of cost is always to get a local SIM card.

One of the thing in the press release though was an infographic, saying that 100 MB is good for about 400 web pages. This would be an average of 250 Kbytes per page.

I looked around: Vodafone's own homepage is four times that at 1.1 MB. The NZ Herald frontpage is 1.6 MB.

The survey was conducted with Flight Centre agents who travel abroad. Their own home website is 1.3 MB.

Surely the average web page is a lot more than 250 Kbytes these days?

I find it interesting that Apples website virtually suggests getting a local sim card when traveling!

Difference is that the number at the bottom of the shocking bill doesn't get paid to Apple, but it does go to the Telco.

until you see local unlimited mobile broadband I highly doubt you'll see unlimited roaming!

I had the "pleasure" of being overseas on business when this was enforced.  No txt message to advise, just a data suspension.  The help desk didn't know it was being enforced and my account rep had no idea either.  I did get a link to look at the rates hours after the actual implementation but with data disabled, that is pretty useless.
After finally getting the data back it was a needless nusance that we never opted into, but was regulated on us.  As a business im prepaired to wear the costs as long as i can still be productive.  I would have rather opted into the "data angel" option than have it enforced...........

Personally I love this. It's a step in the right direction, and would be great for data usage while only roaming for a short amount of time.
