Topic # 111722 13-Nov-2012 11:10 Send private message

Yesterday and today I've encountered what I think are DNS problems.

Some web pages come up fine in my browser but others sit there for a while with "Looking up hostname for ..." in the browser status bar and then say "Could not locate remote server".  If I refresh the page then sometimes I connect and sometimes I don't, after 5 or so tries I can usually connect.  My FTP program kept telling me it couldn't find the server I was trying to reach, but finally on the 10th attempt it worked.  It took me 5 or 6 attempts before Spybot could update itself.  What I'm trying to say is that this isn't limited to my browser, it's all my internet connected software.

Also it's not on just one PC, but on three different PC's on my LAN.

The router is set to obtain the DNS servers automatically.  The router says that currently the primary is 203.109.129.67 and the secondary is 203.109.129.68.  PC's are set to use the router for DNS.

I've rebooted the router in case it had got itself in a tangle.

Using nslookup to test a site using the Vodafone supplied DNS server I get the following:

C:\Documents and Settings\Murray>nslookup -debug www.aweb4u.co.nz. 203.109.129.67
------------
Got answer:

Doing the same thing but using Google's DNS server I get the following:

------------
Non-authoritative answer:

Address: 202.191.42.30
Aliases: www.aweb4u.co.nz

From the little I know about DNS it looks to me like Vodafone's DNS failed to look up the domain name while Google's worked ok.

Can anyone offer any suggestions for anything else I can try to rule out problems at my end?

I've looked on Vodafone's forum but they're not reporting any problems and no one is complaining there.  I'm in Glenfield on Auckland's North Shore.

johnr: What modem are you using?

Hi John, I'm using a Dynalink RTA1025W.  The PC's are connected via cable, not wirelessly.

Yeah I really need to get another modem to see if that fixes it. I've got another one at home that I can bring into the office, but I won't be able to to that till tomorrow.

No, we were with Ihug and then migrated to Vodafone, so we never received a free modem.  I've got our old D-Link modem here, which we replaced with the Dynalink about 5 years ago, so I might dig that out and give it a try after lunch.

I'm getting the same issues with a HG556a intermittently. Most NZ pages open up fine but overseas ones randomly. Happening at my house and my Mothers house both with Vodafone HG556a.

Will provide screenshot of nslookup -debug www.3ix.com 203.109.129.67 when it goes offline.

I've got the Huawei modem and it's running the latest (because I too had the issue intermittently) but today it's back. I've had kiwiblog, google and some other links simply fail to resolve because of DNS issue. I hit refresh and they're there.

Is weird. Hope that helps.

For now I've added manual DNS settings in the modem and made the 2nd address 8.8.8.8.

I noticed the same thing last night when browsing.. was very slow the first time to load up pages and sometimes they would timeout and require a refresh.

Modem is the Vodafone HG556a with the latest firmware update..

Just assumed it was a glitch in the matrix.

I have the same problem here in Tauranga with my Vodafone modem.  Thought it was just me, even reset my modem and restored my computer.  Glad to know its not just me
