Hey there

Before I go down the path of contacting Vodafone support, I wondered if anyone here has had the same experience and perhaps resolved the issue themselves or have found that there is no solution and are having just putting up with it.

We've recently had Vodafone fibre installed at our new office on Pitt Street in Auckland City. It's a TelstraClear product, still has their logo on the wall cabinet, telstraclear login etc. While we've found via speed tests that the speed is exactly as advertised (30 down, 10 up), what we didn't count on is the ludicrously long delays when browsing the web.

I'm not sure if it's a DNS issue (seems like it) but quite often, especially during the day and with international sites, it can take sometimes up to 20-30 seconds for a website to start loading after you navigate to it. Certain things seem to work ok (eg google autocomplete) and once the website starts to load it seems ok but there are often some really long waits that makes web browsing a terrible experience. Certain websites seem to fare worse, eg. Pinterest, which seems to load in fits and starts and is basically unusable (as shame as we use it for reference a lot). Instagram is also particularly patchy and erratic when used through this connection.

I checked the DNS entries in our router and they're as they should be for TelstraClear:

Primary DNS: 203.97.78.43 Secondary DNS: 203.97.78.44
We're using a Technicolor TG789vn v3 as supplied by Vodafone btw if that makes any difference.

This is an office network and there are a variety of different OSes and devices. This problem is common to all of them. Cheers

Are all of them using WiFi or are some using ethernet?

Hi,

Have you tried an alternate DNS, Multiple computers, Is the network under load, Is this WiFi or Ethernet, What ping times or traceroute stats do you get to trademe or geekzone, IS this primarily an offshore browsing issue, Have you tried a different modem?

(Yes i did ask that, All you need is a modem with a WAN port to connect to the surfboard or what ever you have been given)

I might also mention that previously we had ADSL and despite the slow speeds in general we didn't have these kinds of connection delays. I'd be very surprised if there is an issue with our LAN here.

We have roughly a dozen ethernet connected devices (structured cabling) and half a dozen WIFI connected devices.

It does seem to be a largely offshore browsing issue. And it does seem to be worse during peak hours. It's hard to pin down though as is it very sporadic. I was mainly wondering if there is some kind of DNS bottleneck with the TelstraClear service that you guys might be familiar with.

I haven't tried another router, we're just using what Downer installed.

OK,

Well can you supply some path pings or trace routes?
We cant go off much untill those are sighted. And about the DNS settings can you try the Vodafone ones?
Preferred DNS server: 203.109.129.67
Alternate DNS server: 203.109.129.68

With testing changing the DNS settings, would changing them on one machine be ok or do I need to change them on the router? I'd hesitate to make any changes on the router during business hours cheers

It sounds like a UFB plan with those speeds but if the boxes installed on the wall have Telstra branding its more likely to be over Telstra fibre network (considering you are also in the city). Can you take a photo of them?

Have you tried a different router? The problem you describe seems very odd and very much like a primary DNS timeout.

Hmm maybe it's not a DNS issue after all then... I just tried plugging in 23.23.144.167 to my browser and it took about 20 seconds to start loading pinterest.

Trademe via IP is instantaneous.

You sure its not local network congestion or just high amounts of WAN traffic or you guys always uploading???

I'd be very surprised, we only started experiencing this when fibre went in. Also if it were local congestion I don't understand why some sites are worse than others. I might have to bite the bullet and see if I can get a technician in from Vodafone
