Exactly my thoughts. It'll be interesting to see if the ComCom gets interested in this little aspect of the whole deal.
I'd be a little pissed if I bought something, and it stopped working because I didn't want to pay an ongoing monthly fee.

Also, it's not to say that Apple won't show how upset they are, either: http://smithereensblog.blogspot.com/2008/07/apple-flips-rogers-bird-week-before.html

Given that VF will allegedly sell the phone at NZ$199, you can be assured that the deceptively low entry price means VF is planning to gang-rape you with the cost of the data plan.

So could you buy a $199 then pull out of contract pay the $160 and ziphone it?? So thats $460 bucks hmm my plan could be floor'd..
Or
Buy one from the states and ziphone it.. that is when the 2.0 release comes out which I'm sure those smart guys @ ziphone will sort out.
And Gary great call.. the plans will be thru the roof!!! If there was an app to enable simple teethering via the usb cable then I'd be keen as to have mobile 3g access for my laptop(in the CBD and not the hills of wellington) which would kind of make me feel better about pay an extra 30 bucks a month for a 1gb.. speculation.
iphone 3gs 3.0.1; PS3 good times; windows 7.. so far so good... macbook pro. www.wheninromebro.com contributing editor (new site soon).

I'm trying to get excited, but I'm sooo over this.
Being a per-pay user, who tries to keep my costs below $20 monthly, I doubt there is going to be any attraction for me to go onto plan...
But if the plan includes a generous data cap to allow unrestricted internet browsing (not including bandwidth intensive sites like video), and a texting package, I may look at it
Otherwise, I would prefer pre-pay, and maybe use the $1 a day data cap plan coming out....suit me better

Newsflash:
The iPhone 3G will/won't be unlockable...
The handset cost will be $199......or $1000....or both...
The iPhone 3G data plans will be released at 10am Tuesday....
Lines started forming outside VF stores in all major cities today.
--
Meanwhile in other news Christ's second return was confirmed today.
And now to our weather.
--
Apple and VF have worked the marketing frenzy machine well for this one.
Early adopters will get hammered.
In a month or two we should be able to unlock and import these devices from elsewhere and show VF the finger.

I believe I never said outright the plans were crap - that sort of thing could get a person in trouble...
(of course, I could also just be winding everyone up...or hell - not have a clue at all!)
