Hi, I am currently making a map of free Wi-Fi hotspots around the country, I mainly have libraries at the moment and was wondering if anyone knows more places where it is free or nearly free. I think this would be a handy guide for anyone travelling around the country who want to check emails and other such things without paying an arm and a leg.

Free WiFi NZ Map here.

Hi, the Esquire coffee shops are purported to have free wifi (http://www.esquirescoffee.co.nz/news/free-wifi.html).

Hoogy was asking about "free or nearly free" ... I reckon Esquire falls into that .

It sure does. I use a different marker for these compared to the free ones to distinguish.

My map to date is here.

It would be helpful if visitors could add new wireless APs themselves, and you could then quickly vet them to make sure they're valid.

I'd also register a catchy domain name, this would be a very helpful tool for people without data cards, or if you've left your data card at home.

I would cheak the Aotearoa Peoples Network. They are building a free network of libary internet cafes and I think some of the libarays have wifi (mine does).

This was just what I have put together in a day with not much html, javascript, google maps api experience. I plan on devloping it further when I have time in the future.

jahoog.com is where it will be hosted for the time being as I don't see the point of a seperate domain right now.

I have a few of them included from what I could scrape of a few websites. I sent them an email last night, so hopefully I get some good info of them.

Careful with screen scraping other sites, you run into copyright issues.

I don't think it would take long to build up a database of free wifi spots.  Just make it easy for people to add to, and it will slowly build itself.

One other point, you need to add the zoom in/out buttons to the map for usabilities sake.

I wasn't 'scraping' sites, just was meaning finding the information. I also link to all websites where I get the information from. I am merely collating these into one place with more details on their respective websites.

Easy user input is coming, will implement when I move to new location (yes I have now decided to change location of the site, will update here when it happens). I will also make more UI improvements. I suppose you can call the current site a developer preview.

Added the zoom in/out buttons.

Two that I know...

* Columbus Coffee Dominion Road, Mt Eden is another "free" with a coffee place.
http://www.zenbu.co.nz/entries/show/1095654-columbus-coffee-dominion-road

* Esquires GE Building
GE Building 8 Tangihua Street
Auckland CBD

Will your map include each hotspot?
There would be quite a few for Esquires and Columbus Coffees alone.

Quite a few here... although perhaps some might be less free than others?

New updated map on new website. Will be adding more features over time now that I have the backend sorted.

See link in first post.

Added a zoom to region/city, helps navigation of map.
Added a crude submit hotspot page, that still needs adjustments.

Added 8 more hotspots, thanks to user submissions. Now have 90 free hotspots. I have a proper submit hotspot page now plus minor UI and design updates. More feature updates in the works.
