i work around the waterfront cbdwifi zone.

sometime i need to do some personal banking stuff, i'd prefer to use my iphone to do so.

it seems it's quite hard to connect to the free wifi.

success rate is 50% of time, i bet? but even i'm connected, the wifi no always work.

understand it's a freebie but it fails quite a lot.

maybe they need more sponsors to keep it running (the current sponsors shown on the login page are 99% WLC related).

All 5 of his posts on Geekzone have been to complain about something. Cheesygeek, appreciate your frustration but you may have heard the phrase 'you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.' Perhaps you might consider toning it down a little.

No-one on here HAS to help you. And if you annoy the people who CAN you will not find it assists you in resolving anything more quickly.

Totally agree with John here.

You might as well just put your bank card on a seat at the waterfront with your PIN attached to the back of it

Sorry, are you guys suggesting that SSL doesn't work over the free wifi?

Personally I'm perfectly happy to use internet banking over public wifi...

You're vulnerable to all sorts of trickery including poisoning your DNS so that you're not actually going to your banking site at all. These are easier to do on open Wifi than over the general internet where the routers and switches are locked in data centres where the employees are vetted not to be up to nastiness.

And yes, I'm well aware that SSL is designed to prevent MITM attacks. But it only works if you let it. If you ignore the invalid cert warnings SSL will not save you. Even the clueful sometimes fall for that when they're tired, in a hurry or whatever.

Maybe you need to log a fault? Have you tried ringing them to do so?

Before I did that I'd get as much useful information together as possible to help them out.

Dates, times, locations, phone model, phone software version, help them to help you.

This is why its always important to checkout out the cert for something so critical. I probably check certs now about 10% of the time.

I am possibly over paranoid, always connect to a SSH Tunnel while connected to public wifi. I have used Backtrack, I know how easy it is, I admit to snooping data (Stealing Facebook Sessions were fun when I was younger) plus also Deauthing the guy in the corner downloading stuff, but you can never be too paranoid.

As for the guy complaining he is not getting a free service? It's free, provided as-is, if it doesn't work don't moan and complain, a true geek always has a backup plan (Caffeine in a local coffee shop with /free/ internet)

johnr: Thats a bit ironic considering that even when using 3G you can have MITM attacks occur, it would also probably be easier as more people would probably trust 3G as a secure transit method over WiFi.

SaltyNZ: You would have to be pretty silly to do that, thats like walking up to a cliff, reading the warning sign, going stuff it and walking over the edge any way.

Regardless, this thread is getting off topic...
