Hi all Once again I am not 100% sure where this post fits in exactly. Moderators feel free to move if you see fit. I am trying to find out if there are any regulations or legislation related to setting up a Wi-Fi community to cover a largish area. For instance if we offer VoIP over the wireless would we be considered as a telco and then need to register as a telco? If anyone has any information or can direct me to the right place it would be appreciated. Thanking you in anticipation.

From memory I think there is a 100milliwatt limit on transmit power, I'd guess if you were going over that and someone reported you as interferring with their equipment/services you'd have some regulatory body come and tell you off.

AFAIK its 1 watt EIRP on WiFi bands (2.4ghz/5.8ghz). I ran a 5 watt EIRP setup for a while without getting in trouble thought :) I don't see why you need to register as a "telco" or even if there is such a process. They aren't licensed in this country (business is pretty easy in NZ!) so just setup your gear, buy the bandwidth and away you go!

You would want to register as a provider, otherwise you would be responsible for any illegal P2P download coming out of your IP range... Lots of people in NZ are now using Wi-Fi to provide large areas of coverage. It's open spectrum for anyone to use so stay within power outputs and generally behave politely [no maliciousness] and away you go.
