We have recently moved house, previously had (reasonably) good service from Compass, VOIP. They are unable to provide a 'phone service at our new address, but can supply broadband. I think it's a speed issue, though they didn't really let on. My upload speed is around 250k. I am having huge difficulty finding another provider, 2talk, VFX, Kiwilink etc. but recently have been trying very hard for the Orcon Genius plan. After incredibly frustrating and lengthy holding on the 'phone (I know all the songs) over the last couple of months and some incredible disinformation surrounding copper and fiber (you can't have genius because you have fiber/you can't have genius because you don't have fiber) they have finally come back with"we can not connect you up to Genius.Installers came back and said that the area is fibre fed, therefore it is not ADSL compatible." I thought all exchanges were connected through fiber these days. There is no fiber to our house, it's copper and I've seen it with me own peepers.I think it's an exchange issue, or is it? We are RD2 Waiuku. Any help gratefully appreciated.

So what you are saying is that: 1. You are too far away from an exchange (your rural RD2) so you get low ADSL1 speeds? 2. You cant find a VOIP phone line provider? who will set you up from start to finish (auto provision?) 3. They're mentioning something about fiber? Maybe you haven't been cabnetised yet? Hense the low ADSL1 speeds 4. Maybe you have been put onto a waiting list for broadband because there is not enough ports available? You should know: 1.Orcon Genius are no longer accepting any NZ connections 2. If you live too far away from an exchange/cabinet, your speeds may be too low for VOIP (not likely) Why can't you just sign up to 2Talk VOIP? They will provide a service even if you think you can't get it Why not get a standard normal phone line? Maybe your trying to say that you can get a normal phone, but not broadband? You didn't explain yourself properly, and I can't really understand what your saying. You need to structure your sentences better. Give it another go.

Telecom have a provisioning tool that any ISP can use that'll give an instant answer as to whether a house can receive broadband, and an estimate of sync speed. It's probably clear that you're outside the coverage area at present. I would suspect you're confused about the fibre/copper scenario so ignore that, as it's irrevelent in your case. Since you haven't given us your address there is no way for anybody else to check, but you can check yourself on www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps to see if you'll be covered by all the new cabinets in the area towards the end of this year. *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? Incidentally, they have already sent me their box of tricks, twice. The modem/router thing plus detachable phone. Then later, (both times) informed me they can't connect me. 2. I presume because you said in your OP you have an upload speed of 250K that you have broadband. So all you need to do is open up a free 2talk account (no talking needed) get a SPA2102 ATA and follow SBiddle's guide to Auto provision it, put your 2talk number and password in it and your away laughing. If you use the G729a codec you should have enough bandwidth for that no matter what your speed. If all works well get a proper phone number or port one. hope that helps. Now on Slingshot Better Network and it's better.
