Topic # 100704 17-Apr-2012 10:12 Send private message

I rang TCL last week to upgrade my plan from 60gb to 90gb, and was told it would be done over the weekend. Hadn't been done today so I rang back. Was told that the delay was because the 90gb plan was no longer available, ditto the 120gb plan. Instead they are putting me on a 100mb/sec, 100gb plan for $115 a month, but that it will require a new modem install (makes sense if DOCSIS3).

Any official comment from TCL on this?

If that pricing also applies to UFB then I'll sign up as soon as I can :)

Don't you just run the risk of blowing through it even quicker?

I'm also interested to see if they offer an unlimited data plan for a price competitive with UFB, because we all know of the public unmetered weekend, and I've heard rumours of a select few testing an uncapped 24/7 plan for TCL.

One would think so. I can't see an increase of 10gb lasting very long at those speeds. Hell you could blow 100gb in a couple of days if you were trying.

I was on the Docsis 100mb trial way back and tbh the speed increase does very little. You are still constrained by the other end. The unlimited traffic then was nice tho :D

100 GB for $115 is still the same old pricing as the current 120 GB plan for $135. (plus 20 GB overage for $30)

I don't care at all about 100 Mbps instead of 25 Mbps. I want CHEAPER GB. My modem is already doing 300+ GB per month at the current 25 Mbps ? and was at 15 Mbps before that. Al that the speed means is it's gone from 7% utilization to 4%, and 100 Mbps would be 1% utilization.

What I want is to pay ~$100/month for that usage, not $400+ as at the moment.

Hmm weird. The "25 Mbps ? and was" in the previous comment was an ellipsis (...) not a "?" when I typed it. UTF8 fail? Here's another: "…".

Switch to ADSL?  Or move to somewhere that will get UFB sooner?

That usage on ADSL would be cheaper. Maxnet unlimited naked DSL is $125/mo (and slingshot is $90), which is less than half of what your overage charges are.  Of course it may not be as fast, and you only get 1Mbps up :-(

(I'm stuck on ADSL despite TCL being in our street, they say our house is too low for the cable to reach it or something)

I definitely do NOT want unlimited anything. It will always suck. I want decent speed and am happy to pay for what I use. However per GB prices for additional data have not come down in something like five years, which seems wrong.

Houses 50m-100m from me to the east, to the north, and to the west will have UFB in July. But not my street (which is the only one with cable). I have excellent line of sight to probably ten houses on those streets. If TC prices don't move by then I'll definitely have a talk with one of them. I already have a 70 Mbps WIFI link across to a friend in Grenada and share my cable with them, so another shorter link is no problem technically or splitting the bill wise.

Just received:

Leading telecommunications company TelstraClear today launched New Zealand’s fastest broadband for residential customers on its cable network, running at 100Mbps download. This is the same as the top speed that will initially be offered on the under-construction ultra fast broadband network.

TelstraClear chief executive Allan Freeth says that the company has many business customers already taking advantage of its high-speed services.

“In 2010 we trialled 100Mbps broadband for cable-connected residential customers and it worked extremely well, and some of those people are still connected at that speed. We decided to postpone the commercial launch as there was little market for it at the time. In the last few years, things have changed and the appetite for speed is now there so we now offer next generation WarpSpeed broadband to residential customers.”

The price for New Zealand’s fastest broadband starts at just $115.95 per month for 100Gb of data, 100Mbps download speed and 10Mbps upload.

“We’ve been a market leader for many years and our cable service has consistently been rated the fastest broadband in independent tests. This 100mbps WarpSpeed broadband well and truly cements that well-earned reputation.”

Allan Freeth says that customers on TelstraClear’s cable service (Wellington, Kapiti and Christchurch) can upgrade to the new 100Mbps WarpSpeed and enjoy broadband they’ve only dreamt of, especially if they’re browsing the TelstraClear unmetered websites, including all the MediaWorks TV and radio station sites.

“Once more we’re leading the way in New Zealand and proving that we’re the home of broadband. We are bringing the future to Kiwis today. You don’t need to wait up to 10 years for ultra fast broadband.”

I really have to laugh, You guys could have waited atleast 12 months from when your CEO was quoted as saying "No demand" for this product as a reason why you didn't release plans
