DonGould:
freitasm:  TelstraClear speedtest

lol...  I was reading someone claiming their 100mbit service was doing 200mbit...

I just ran a few tests and I'm getting 26mbit on my 15mbit service according to that meter to both Chch and Wgtn servers... didn't bother testing Auckland.

I wonder if TCL are no longer restricting speeds on the PHY layer, but at layer 3 once they leave the network?

i've had a few problems with adsl saying impossibly high numbers to speedtest.net.   like uhh 26.54 megabit down.

i wouldn't say speedtest.net is necessarily accurate - especially for close sites - this test was auckland to auckland.

How's everyone's international speed tonight? I'm getting high (~450 ms) pings to WoW in the US, and for example the image at the top of http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=82&topicid=101110 is loading painstaking slowly.

DSL in Whakatane, Clearnet DNS.

Just to complicate matters I'm going out now and can't do any more tests! But the Geekzone speedtest is returning decent speeds.

Well, it's not just me; one of my other WoW friends, also with TCL, just asked me "hey is your telstra connection dodgy in the evenings?"

It's fine at this time of the day, but by maybe 5 pm it's pretty awful for gaming. He too has no problems within NZ, but once he tries to go out of the country it slows to a crawl. I'll try to get some speedtests if it happens tonight.

I figured the slow speeds were happening because of the school holidays but I guess something might actually be wrong. For me it seems that the slow speeds start from about 4pm to around 12am. During that time loading pretty much any website is a lot slower. Gaming is near impossible with the amount of lag. On the ventrilo server I talk on, my ping tends to fluctuate from 250-1500. Normally it's between 170-225. This type of thing happened when I was with Telecom too. They would throttle speeds at night around the same times. I'm on an ADSL connection in Rotorua btw.

Sitting in WoW now at ~100 ms higher than usual, WHK/AP cabinet. Friend on the Te Teko exchange is having similar issues.

Quite confusing... It seems there are quite a few problems on TelstraClear in the last couple of weeks - slow speeds in the evenings, YouTube not working well, proxy causing troubles...

Right now I am having a hard time hitting international servers - trying to check the Geekzone events on Eventbrite and not going anywhere fast...

I'm having quite a few issues with youtube also. Can watch one video fine buffers fast, then go to watch another and it won't load at all stutters along then the little beach ball comes up and freezes safari for good. very strange and annoying! Figured it might be my computer

It seems TCL has many recurring issues that they cannot seem to manage themselves. Surely internal systems within TCL should be picking up these problems and addressing them before their client base starts moaning.

Roll on UFB choices...

Just tried accessing a website with CDN hosted with Cloudflare now and it failed. Trying to access the Cloudflare website itself and it times out.

Cancel that. It appears other factors were involved - including a CloudFlare outage (not confirmed).

Can't use Quickflix at the moment; it runs for 30 seconds and then freezes to buffer again. This thread was created two weeks ago and TCL hasn't bothered to fix it yet!

Last night I had problems loading some content from static.stuff.co.nz and thought it could be the busy period of the day. But this morning a Trade Me page was having problems to load - and I worry when TelstraClear have problems loading Trade Me...

Hi everyone.

TelstraClear has bought more international data capacity to give customers a better Internet experience. Our customers have been taking advantage of our network and keen pricing to use the Internet to its fullest.

However, this is more data more quickly than we anticipated and has caused some people to experience slower than desirable Internet browsing at peak periods (most evenings). To again improve our customer experience we are substantially increasing our international capacity. Work is underway to add the infrastructure needed for this, and we expect the extra capacity to be in place by the end of next week.
Please note that there are many other factors that can impact on Internet speeds and you may not always notice a difference. In some cases, particularly where our customers are on a wholesale network that is already congested, you may notice little, if any, change. We are aware of these situations and have asked our wholesaler to increase its capacity to improve the service our customers receive.

I hope this update is helpful.

Gary
