Shouldn't that be smtp.clear.net.nz ? I'm on cable and use that server - shouldn't it be the same for DSL connections?

Well picked that was what I was using actually, but the key is that their support advises SMTP does not work till the churning/shift is completed.
Cheers,
Al

So in other words, until you're transitioned to TelstraClear they won't let you relay mail through their SMTP server. Isn't that normal for every ISP? To only accept connections from their own IP range?

After 4 years of good internet performance  I moved from a Xtra ADSL connection to a Telstra Clear in May for their $75 broadband offer. From the changeover I noticed a drop in performance which was clear when I ran the speed tests and the download speed was under 1Mbps well down from the service from Xtra that was consistently over 3Mbps.

I started checking Geekzone to see if it was just me and there are similar reports. I have seen the post from Telstra saying the bandwidth is being increased and testing again tonight the download is up to 1.5Mbps so only half the performance of Xtra.

I am still on the free portion of the Telstra Clear offer but if this doesn't improve I will be dumping them and moving to another provider based on the offering being not up to acceptable use. At present I am putting up with the speed as the uptake of the offer may have been higher than Telstra expected and I expect that they will be improving the performance to compensate for the additional users.

Yes, that is normal pratice. Otherwise anyone could channel SMTP email through the anonymous connection i.e. SPAM

Seem to be transferred now. Not sure about phone, but info was that if the net was transferred, then the phone was.
I found my transfer hadnt gone through after the sent me a connected email. Not sure if you need to switch off your modem to get the transfer activated, but once I had switched off the modem then back on again my previous ISP was gone and I had to put the TC user/password in and away it went.

Speed seems to be the same even at peak time eg 6Mbs/.7Mbs

Nice to have 40Gb bandwidth ;-)

Will advise if anything amiss happens, but so far TC have connected on time, and their customer service on the 3 calls I made even though a little slow to respond, was fine.
Cheers,
Alistair

I've just ran the speed test at http://auckland.speedtest.telstraclear.co.nz/ and got 12.13Mbps download and 0.95Mbps upload (8:39pm, which I guess is peak time). Is this good?

I have just signed up to this deal just now. Have been a Telecom and Slingshot customer in the past and don't have anything bad to say about either of them. It was the $75 deal that enticed me to switch as we are moving into a new place this weekend.
Got informed it would be 5-8 working days to connect, which took me by surprise but all will be good as I have 3gb i can use through iPhone tethering.
Receiving the 3rd month for free as i am supplying my own router.
Forgot to ask about if there is a connection charge!! :/. I won't be too impressed if i get one as they make no mention of it on the website and when the representative is walking you through the terms and conditions they should make you well aware of it then and there, the customer should not have to enquire about one!

Dont be too worried as there are others on this thread who have had their fees reversed so by now I would guess it wont apply. They have been excellent to deal with from my point of view and my connection is every bit as good as before (Waihi Beach location)

They have had a wee bit of trouble with their email server, but if you are not using .clear.net.nz then its not a problem.

They also had a problem with my Big Back Yard where I have not been transferred over properly but confirm that if there are anycharges those will be reversed - take note.
Big Back Yard is a real bonus and a much better offering than Telecom my free calling area is now huge.

Cheers and hope you remain a happy TC customer.
Sounds like I work for TC eh?
Alistair.

I'm considering taking the $75 deal too [DSL]

The only things putting me off are:

1. The bad stories around moving from existing provider to TCL, did anyone suffer lost of service i..e. no broadband between ISPs

2. What if I find my speeds are significanlty worse - I would have signed for 12 months and not be able to get out without the $199 penalty ?

3. Can I still use toll bypass with another provider ?

4. If UFB lowers copper pricing in the next 12 months will I end up potentially paying more despite the TCL deal being attractive now ?

5. What  modem are people getting ?

The bandwidth problems seem to exist mainly in Tauranga.
If price is not a major for you, then its no big advantage, but I opted for no modem and got 3 months free. The main reasopn for my move was I had 5Gb data then paid after that so what with Telecom phone line and another ISP broadband the TCL deal was much cheaper.
The modem type is discussed elsewhere in the forums.
The switchover for me was without problems.
You can (and I do) use your calling card eg Kiora, or use a prefix but I would check with TCL sales to ensure your preferred arrangement would still work.
Re 4..it would be hard to beat 3 free months, 40Gb/month, Big Back Yard, as long as you get good broadband.

If you do the move lets know how it went here.

Well my connection went without a problem. Phone connected Friday and broadband was activated Saturday.
I received documentation last week stating that the connection fee was waived so i was happy about that.
Speeds seem good, i haven't had any issues. So all in all im a happy camper!

According to the other thread it appears some people are being charged a connection fee, which so far I cannot find in their T&Cs

Has anyone got any clarity ?

Im in Blenheim so a little off the beaten track :). I believe they were charging connection fees but are no longer doing so due to public outcry.

Well there should be outcry as there is nothing mentioned anywhere I can find yet. That said I'll get in writing from them that there will be no connection fee, that I can use toll bypass [since the TCL call rates are not competitive], what modem I can expect [as there seems to be variation] and a commitment to no significant disruption of broadband or telephone service [my last ISP DSL change over caused a disruption of approx 20 mins I can live with 1/2 day but not days as some have apparently reported

+ I'll bench mark my DSL performance
