RmACK:
DonGould: Did some testing the other night, 95mbit UDP from .us, but TCP traffic was just a dog. Only thing we could put it down to is DPI or traffic management.

I think you're onto something there. I've just been trying proxying via an ssh tunnel to my VPS and webpages are much snappier.

SSH is TCP, so what you've managed to do is bypass the proxy farm which might or might not help things.

Set up a PPTP tunnel, which is UDP iirc, and then try pulling some bits over that and you should notice a real difference.

What's your ping though the BRAS like?  I was using WinMTR to watch it for a while and it looked like it's a bit congested.

I know they're doing some work in that space currently, don't know what exactly (magic 8Ball, are you about? ;) )

Cant say I did any testing last night because I had seen other forums so knew there were some slow downs occurring. Seems to be acceptable, I only noticed it because a few different sites I went to took forever to load.

What's crawling though?

I did a bunch of speed tests the other night with speedtest.net around the country for all the different servers and it's all really perplexing stuff.

Most of the results showed I could upload at full speed, which means all the other providers are buying enough capacity of Telstra (or peers) so that they can download what ever capacity at full speed to their customers.

However, in many cases I could upload to other NZ ISP sites faster than I could download, which means that Telstra isn't buying enough capacity back from them doesn't it?

I was wondering if it just means the national Telstra fibre network is just crap, but that of course doesn't really make sense if I can upload faster than I can download.

But I think we also have to keep this a bit real at the same time... I'm doing tests on a 100/10 which I've had for less than a month.

Only an idiot signed off on a whole core network upgrade for faster tails before you actually know what customer commitment you have.

We've had NGN in place nationally now for how long?

We've just got the ELUB thing in place and done away with the 45k hand overs...

So now providers are ramping up the data caps, and people are actually able to use them... and clearly are.

The other thing about these new wifi modems that all the providers have been putting out there is that they're .n and just work better than the old crap... so everything is sort of ramping up at the same time.

I wonder if all this will palatue a bit in the next 6 months or if it's actually going to compound as Chorus starts to fight back and want some users on its VDSL2 network and UFB ramps up and RBI starts to come on line?

 Men (and lurking ladies),

Can you pick a site that is really pissing you off (aka taking an epoc to load) and check and see if it's all heading out the REACH international path please?  Smokeping for me went a bit mental as of ~10am this morning, via the REACH (Telstra International) path, where the other international paths aren't displaying anywhere near the nasty turn around time to retrieve a webpage

The path in question will include something like

Don, using Firebug, that page loads for me in 1.5 seconds.  It got hung up on a (maybe nonexistent) video document for 5 seconds before timing that GET out, I believe.  The offending link is

You sure have to hope they can write micro-code for routers better than they code webpages... :P

Been a dog on my laptop all night but trace route is fast enough.

But I've got Facebook open at the same time and I really have to wonder if the code on some of these sites just grinds things to a halt?

It's really easy to have been surfing for a few hours on a night and start to see a slow down so blame the ISP but just not notice that your browser has sprung a memory leek.

Firefox is sitting about about 20% CPU usage for me right now and I've only got 6 tabs open, so what's causing so much use?

The moment you churn out another tab on FF, it's been my experience that FF starts to chew memory hsnd over fist and sometimes it just goes batsh!t mad processor-wise (on a fairly geriatric Mac book pro).  At present, with 7 tabs open, FF is chewing a craptonne of resources.

Or are you thinking about once you get past the overseas script readers to the higher support guys in NZ?

Ha, I thought my performance couldn't get any worse, scraping the bottom of the barrel with them already.
Turns out they apparently put their foot through the bottom and all my international dribbled out.

Doesn't make too much of a difference in reality I guess. Why quibble about 3.5 KB when you were getting 24 to 32 kb through FTP max anyway?
