I think this is an excellent move. I much prefer Vodafone's general attitude than Telstra's so this is the right way around for a sale.

boby55: I don't think the Commerce Commission will like this if it goes ahead.

Why? I see very little reason for them to object. Neither is a majority player and even combined they still don't have the same market share as Telecom Retail.

As we enter the UFB world NZ's biggest telco in 10 years could very easily be a player that doesn't even yet exist on a drawing board.

Well, forcing Telecom/Chrous split but letting Voda/TCL merging to become the biggest vertically integrate telco?  Hmmm...

TelstraClear start offering the Samsung Galaxy S2 around the same time as the S3 comes out (which Telecom/Vodafone are now offering).

This sums up my feelings about them: Absolutely clueless.

I wonder if the merger went ahead if that would mean cheaper fibre access for those of us in Auckland who don't have UFB for a long while, but do have access to both TCL Fibre and Chorus Fibre on the old P2P system?

Right now you are still looking at $500+ for a 10/10 Circuit.

Unfortunately I imagine it wouldn't happen very quickly and even if the acquisition did happen quickly it would still take VFNZ a long time to get a handle on the mess that is TCLNZ and their long winded way of doing absolutely everything.

I hope its a good thing but cant say they made Ihug better. Can hope tho. Do think TelstraClear need to be more innovative (as many have said on here re tv and net plans) but the money/desire has not been there for a long time.

Rocks are rocks. Auckland is full of the volcanic stuff - those fundamentals wo'nt change regardless of what happens here - and to break up the ground costs real money regardless of who's shirt the subbie is wearing.

TCL does have a small advantage in part of CBD's for Business, with it's own Copper network and ability to extend Fibre where it makes sense. But then, Vector has also spent a shedlod making Fibre available to Auckland as well... wonder what will happen there.

If you have access to TCL fibre now for Business, you're in a lucky position - so take advantage of it. But for great many companies including TCL, the only network available will be UFB (Chorus, NorthPower, Enable and UFF) and that's that. The monthly fees are preset by Government, as are many of the conditions (like yearly CPI increases).

But if it were to happen would it mean Vodafone would be any closer to single account billing????

madLOL; if anything would push it out another decade.

Trust that the comcom piss all over this little brush fire; the cozy duopoly held us back for long enough.

I dispute this utterly; and will eat my router if proven wrong.

It's not even a done deal. I am not sure how much money we are talking about here, but it would be in the billions surely. I am not sure, but do VF even have the resources for such an acquisition?

I imagine Due Dilligence on TCL would be a freaking nightmare.

Ignoring the TCL Cable HFC network, which is pretty minimal in the broader scheme of things, a combined TCL/VF would have the same degree of integration as new Telecom. Both would have mobile networks, nationwide fibre backhaul, a bit of P2P fibre around towns, and both would be reliant on a third party (Chorus/LFC) for the last mile. So not completely vertically integrated, so cant see it being inconsistent with the Telecom/Chorus split.

Not saying that they wont have a oligopolistic power though.

I find this all quite interesting, given that up until this afternoon, talk was of VF international disposing of NZ/AU operations.

It seems to me that under a VF/TCL scenario, they should acquire an iCT provider, with a few data centres, and from an all-inclusive competitor to Gen-i

What exactly do you expect from a VMNO; somehow they can break the realities for business? It's a a fully subsidised phone ($620 cheapest price spy) and a decent plan. Not everyone needs the latest and greatest.

Now admittedly their call center can often suck; but after kicking up a fuss recently (helping family with a new install) I found their unsolicited follow up quite redeeming. Though they certainly could invest in a bit more international capacity.

You simply can't offer cheap fibre access on fibre network with P2P architecture. A port costs money, and GPON brings that cost down when it can be shared between 24 users.
